| The Clifford Brown - Max Roach Quintet was a landmark unit. It had |
| an uncanny ability to convey the tumbling melodicism of bebop |
| while it introduced a strong blues element - the very |
| characteristics that came to define the hard-bop style. By the end |
| of the Fifties that style was everywhere - and it has a powerful |
| influence on popular music today - but Brownie and Roach were |
| there at the git-go. |

| Alone Together is a great introduction to that classic band and |
| some of its startling, original compositions - but it also |
| features Brownie without Roach backing Helen Merrill and Sarah |
| Vaughan on standards. Further, disc two showcases many sides of |
| Max Roach, the multi-percussionist who is going at it at age |
| seventy-one. Ten tracks (from eight different Mercury LPs) are |
| available here on CD for the first time, displaying both his |
| protean leadership and compositional talents - with accompanists |
| as diverse as the Boston Percussion Ensemble and vocalist Abbey |
| Lincoln. |

| Little, Hank Mobley and Sonny Rollins. |
