│║ IÆm not particularly familiar with Visions of ║ │
│║ Atlantis, but theyÆve always existed just off ║ │
│║ the edge of my radar due to the pedigree of ║ │
│║ members involved, specifically ex-frontwoman ║ │
│║ Maxi Nil, of who I am a big fan of in Jaded ║ │
│║ Star. Once she withdrew from the band in 2013, ║ │
│║ the expected downtime has swelled to three ║ │
│║ years, and the band felt the need to introduce a ║ │
│║ stopgap EP to acclimate fans with former ║ │
│║ Serenity crooner ClΘmentine Delauney; a ║ │
│║ pleasant, if somewhat shrill voice that lacks ║ │
│║ the huskier command of Nil, but with a more ║ │
│║ classically-inflected timbre to push the band ║ │
│║ toward more typical waters for better or worse ║ │
│║ on the new EP Old Routes û New Waters. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ As the nomenclature implies, these are older ║ │
│║ cuts recorded with the current lineup to give ║ │
│║ longtime fans a coherent contrast in regards to ║ │
│║ both quality and execution. And well, this is ║ │
│║ where Visions of Atlantis will earn most of ║ │
│║ their detractors. They are yet another act that ║ │
│║ feel inclined to practice the tiring dichotomy ║ │
│║ of the male and female vocal trade-off. Executed ║ │
│║ in a mold more similar to Nightwish as opposed ║ │
│║ to the more clichΘ beauty and beast paradigm, ║ │
│║ the band at least gives the male singer enough ║ │
│║ lines to crank out an accretion of appeal all ║ │
│║ his own, as opposed to coming off as a ║ │
│║ distraction under the inveigling guise of ║ │
│║ dynamism. Whether or not Old Routes û New Waters ║ │
│║ reasserts the bandÆs reputation in a positive ║ │
│║ manner, the material is pleasant if a bit ║ │
│║ lacking in cracking metal virulence. Without ║ │
│║ neoclassical technicality to fall back on, the ║ │
│║ guitars are backed into a corner and forced to ║ │
│║ radiate flaccid power chords and featureless ║ │
│║ filler to link the chains between orchestral ║ │
│║ volleys. Save for some meaty licks on ôLast Shut ║ │
│║ of Your Eyes,ö the riffs leave much to be ║ │
│║ desired. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Moreover, much of this material is too ║ │
│║ understated and slow. ItÆs fine to employ a ║ │
│║ ballad (in fact, its arguably expected), but ║ │
│║ more than half of this EP muses its way to heavy ║ │
│║ eyelids and many a checked watch. Visions of ║ │
│║ Atlantis are a capable pseudo-symphonic female- ║ │
│║ fronted act, but they need to focus on wiser ║ │
│║ implementation of the orchestral variant. The ║ │
│║ bombastic yet uninspired keyboard runs that open ║ │
│║ ôLovebearing Stormö set the stage in a less than ║ │
│║ impressive manner, and this remains a monkey on ║ │
│║ the bandÆs collective back for the rest of the ║ │
│║ EP. The synths arenÆt propulsive enough to ║ │
│║ mitigate the dearth of sticky vocal lines, and ║ │
│║ if the band considers this a superior update to ║ │
│║ these cuts, I honestly feel absolutely no need ║ │
│║ to track down the originals. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Old Routes û New Waters does serve its basic ║ │
│║ purpose, that being a proper inauguration for ║ │
│║ ClΘmentine Delauney. Still, Visions of Atlantis ║ │
│║ seem to exist in such a restricted set of ║ │
│║ stylistic parameters; it gives them too little ║ │
│║ to work with. It lacks the chest-pumping bravado ║ │
│║ of later Nightwish, falling somewhere closer to ║ │
│║ Delain, Sirenia and perhaps Xandria. It feels ║ │
│║ reasonably honest and conjures some genuine ║ │
│║ nostalgia on select moments, but IÆd rather have ║ │
│║ a fleshed out full length. Not the most engaging ║ │
│║ material IÆve heard in the style, Old Routes û ║ │
│║ New Waters doesnÆt give this listener a reason ║ │
│║ to tackle Visions of AtlantisÆ back catalogue. ║ │
│║ Your mileage can and will vary, but kudos on the ║ │
│║ breathtakingly beautiful cover art in any event. ║ │
