Which box does Moodlex fit in for god's sake?
If you take a look at the career of Moodlex (aka Frank Bongers),
you'll probably raise your eyebrows. He's like a fish feeling at home
everywhere yet nowhere, that's how many different styles he combines
in his music. He started out as a nine year old musical prodigy child
on the piano and violin, playing in orchestras in his own country
(Belgium) and abroad. He was well on his way of becoming a promising
solist, when suddenly he broke off his education at the Antwerp
Conservatory, and instantly started to build on a career as
electronic artist. His first cd was released at Wally's Groove World,
the famous deep house label in Antwerp. It immediately put him on the
world map of deep house, jazzy grooves and downtempo maestro. With
his latin-bossa-world-single "Original", he found a listening ear
with producers as Mr. Scruff and Buscemi who still moans "I still
think your first cd is the best one - and I still play that single
every time!". But, what do you do if you listen to all different
kinds of music and just can't get enough of it?! Well, you go look
elsewhere to new sounds and set up your own label. And successfully
so it looks.
The sequel to "Moodlex Sessions" makes a lot of people stagger,
because it's no longer about palmtrees and warm rhodes sounds. With
the chainsaw at hand, Frank cuts room for a new, British and
particularly greasy and raw sound, to which he adds the voices of 4
talented singers. The first single "Just One Look" creates havoc for
weeks on end as hotshot-single on Studio Brussels' playlist. Laurent
Garnier himself reports to him that the single secured a permanent
spot in his record collection.
It doesn't stop there - Derrick Carter adds the Jacob London remix to
his double compilation with Mark Farina for the Om Records label.
This means that Frank with his for Belgium unique laptop-sets
overtakes about every hot club which exists in 2004. - He works off
the complete list : CafΘ d'Anvers, Club Geluk, Supper Club, Notting
Hill Arts Club, Amsterdam Dance Event, Dance Hill, Fill Collins Club,
Vooruit Gent, Halycon NYC, Le You, Montuno's Muziek-o-droom, City
Parade, Alter Ego Festival, 10 Days Off and many many others. He
enthousiastically shares the stage with big names like Jazzanova,
Phil Weeks, Hector Moralez, Jan Van Biesen, Alex Klimow, Chris
Carrier, Briskey, Ed & Kim, Arsenal, Buscemi, Mauro, Tom Barman, Paul
Thomas, Pepe Bradock, Alex Gopher, Etienne 'd Crecy, Swayzak, ....
Stubborn as he is, Frank of course doesn't want to be classified as
"just a guy who likes foolin' around with some buttons", and shows
his true musical capacities by successfully creating Moodlex XL: on
StuBru.Uit and Petrol he gives a sample of what is all possible live.
2005 and Frank obviously still hasn't got the slightest intention to
stop exploring his musical abilities. Fascinated by the British sound
which put him on the forefront the past year, he even goes a step
beyond. Pigheadedly he makes his way over to the other side - away
with the deep house and latin beats, now it's time for hiphop, broken
beat, rock (!), electronica and drum 'n bass. The single "Are we
doin' it?" clearly shows which direction he's going. When this track
from the Album "24" is picked and remixed with MC vocals and
screaming guitars, it's put on Studio Brussels' playlist and soon
makes name as "fresh and f****** spicy". He makes his new musical
journey by illegally remixing stuf from his personal favorite artists
like Jamiroquaoi, Basement Jaxx and LCD Soundsystem during his own
gigs. With his own music and this "Bootlex of Moodlex" he's well on
the way to turn Belgium and the world upside down - sometimes solo
with MC, sometimes as live "electronica meets rock" version Moodlex
XL. And yes, maybe soon in your own living room :)
Moodlex XL
With a character as that of Frank Bongers, it is far from easy to
find the right people, but if you count all the talents which he has
brought together in Moodlex XL, I guess you can state that he
succeeded. Frank summs them up : "Stefan - guitarist and old friend -
cuts through the songs in my favorite way. Luc, the drummer which I
absolutely wanted in the band because - of all the drummers which I
saw play - he's by far the only one who "drums with his balls". MC
Ebony who perfectly knows where I want to go and each time pushes the
bounderies a little further, and last but not least Chantal - whom I
called to ask whether she didn't know any other female singers, but
proved to be the very best choice herself to complete the group.
Together we are Moodlex XL and it rocks!
