Our man with the plan is back, this time approaching the lore of a
little state called Illinois. Strumming, plucking and humming the songs
from his humanist (Christian?) point of view, he conjures and imagines
forgotten myths of the little guy--the small town, the serial killer,
the skyscraper. Throughout, it is that which is not said about the
small town, the serial killer, or skyscraper that points to a greater
mystery. Sufjan Stevens is here to proclaim.
However sincere or heartfelt the narratives, Sufjan is a musician first
and it really shows on some of these Folkin' tunes.
