Release Notes:
From the ashes of Zumpano rises a phoenix...called
Sparrow? Since mid-90's retro-pop group Zumpano
disbanded a few years ago, namesake drummer Jason's
been cultivating his own group, though this time as
lead singer. He may lack the songwriting and singing
chops of former bandmate Carl Newman, but Jason's
first single "The Early Years", with its "Classical
Gas"-inspired hook and unabashedly candid vocals,
evokes the same Brady Bunch wholesomeness that
Zumpano (the band) predicated its sound on. The
track is utterly innocuous, from the Playskool drum
kit that kicks off the song to Zumpano's desperate
chorus plea "How do I get from here?" yet it steers
clear of the schmaltz that doomed Zumpano coevals
Weezer and Oasis. It's repetitive, yes, and the
melody's a bit too easy, but what better songwriting
can you expect from a former drummer not named Dave
Grohl?
