Release Notes:
--------
Terence BlanchardÆs jazz reaches way beyond the
sound of his trumpet, however clear and brilliant or
soft and intense his playing may be. During the past
20 years, on the strength of poll-topping CDs,
Grammy Award nominations, and award-winning
Hollywood film scores for directors including Spike
Lee, Blanchard has established himself among the
most influential jazz composers and players of his
generation.
His signing to Blue Note Records seems a natural; At
Blue Note, he joins a jazz-driven legacy stretching
back to 1939 that includes formative albums by one
of BlanchardÆs mentors, the legendary Art Blakey,
and which shapes the contours of modern jazz today.
Bounce ù his Blue Note debut, and his 10th album as
a jazz artist (he has another dozen film score
releases to his credit) ù is the proof. Blanchard
joins modern standard-bearers of jazz, each with
their own take on jazz tradition and their own
particular interests.
BlanchardÆs success is two-pronged. As a jazz
musician, he is a multi-Grammy Award nominee, most
recently in 2002 for ôLost in A Fogö from LetÆs Get
Lost. On that disc, Blanchard remade the standards
of composer Jimmy McHugh, a giant of the golden age
of the American popular song. He took some of
McHughÆs vast repertoire as the springboard for his
own improvisational statements, augmenting his band
with four distinctive singers ù Diana Krall, Jane
Monheit, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson.
As a film composer, Blanchard received a Golden
Globe nomination for his most recent film project,
Spike LeeÆs, 25th Hour. He began his film scoring
career in the late Æ80s working with Lee on films
such as MoÆ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X,
Clockers, Summer of Sam, Bamboozled, the Academy
Award-nominated 1997 documentary Four Little Girls
and the recently released documentary Jim Brown: All
American. He recently scored the runaway hit,
Barbershop, directed by Tim Story and starring Ice
Cube.
He is also dedicated to music education, having
recently accepted an appointment to the University
of Southern California (USC) as the Artistic
Director for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz
Performance.
Born on March 13, 1962, in New Orleans, Louisiana
and an alumnus of the New Orleans Center of Creative
Art, Blanchard was encouraged early on by his
musically inclined father, Joseph Oliver. While in
the third grade, a jazz band came to his school for
an assembly. He was present in the audience and
attentively aware of one Alvin Alcorn, the trumpet
player in the band. After hearing him Terence said,
"I want to do that!"
