│ │
│ ItÆs finally finished! Thanks to Eastern DevelopmentÆs elaborate │
│ research æThe ExposuresÆ entire body of work is now also │
│ available to the private aficionado on vinyl or CD. Even after │
│ years of active production this criminally underrated │
│ collaboration of three immensely talented composers (M. Cretu, │
│ N. Gratin and O. Grouton, otherwise known as æThe ExposuresÆ) │
│ remains almost completely unknown to a wider audience. Now this │
│ is about to change! │
│ │
│ But before we delve into this new collection, letÆs return to │
│ the early days of æThe ExposuresÆ. Hired by one of the biggest │
│ and oldest German TV broadcasters in the late 70s our │
│ protagonistsÆ jobs couldnÆt have been any further removed from │
│ composition, but relied on a brand new experiment by the │
│ aforementioned station: still ashamed of the blatant messages │
│ aired in so-called ad breaks the channel tried to soften this │
│ impression by alternating ads with a number of forcedly humorous │
│ short films - and our three composers were amongst the extras │
│ required for these sequences. Nevertheless, it soon transpired │
│ that their real talent lay in the production of film and TV │
│ music and they decided to form the æThe ExposuresÆ, a ghost │
│ writer team whose music, for the subsequent 20 years, would │
│ continue to shape the stationÆs image. But it should take until │
│ 2001 to save æThe ExposuresÆ from complete artistic oblivion │
│ when Berlin-based sampling artist Jan Jelinek invited the │
│ threesome to participate in the preparation and production of │
│ his 2003 album 'La Nouvelle PauvertΘ'. In addition, they │
│ performed a number of concerts together before and after the │
│ album was released. │
│ │
│ But letÆs move on from the biographies to whatÆs truly │
│ important: the music of æThe ExposuresÆ! │
│ │
│ │
│ │
│ Liner Notes │
│ ******************************** │
│ │
│ Collage Of Digital Passion (2002) │
│ Originally intended to serve as a trailer soundtrack for the │
│ science programme éAbenteuer ForschungÆ (adventure research) to │
│ highlight the programmeÆs special edition on ésexuality and │
│ romance in digital postmodernismÆ the entire composition is │
│ based on a collage of countless of æloveÆ samples, all taken │
│ from the RÆnÆB genre. During its first ever use the composition │
│ proved devastating: apparently this æCollage of Digital PassionÆ │
│ had such an aphrodisiac effect that the recording session of │
│ said programme was akin to a sexual orgy. No further details │
│ were revealed by the broadcaster. Unfortunately, the programme │
│ wasnÆt broadcast live so the secret is likely to remain locked │
│ away in the stationÆs archives forever. Nevertheless, Eastern │
│ Development have managed, for the first time ever, to obtain │
│ authorisation for a ætoned downÆ version of the original │
│ composition, providing the listener with a vague idea of the │
│ compositions true impact. │
│ │
│ The Knack(2002) │
│ Another title based on a television commission, in this case a │
│ programme feature focusing on æExtreme TravelÆ. æThe KnackÆ │
│ (accompanied by the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra) was supposed to │
│ provide an acoustic backdrop to Rⁿdiger NehbergÆ spectacular │
│ attempt to cross the Atlantic in a specially fitted pedal boat. │
│ Even a cursory listen to this composition will convey the │
│ nail-biting suspense of this extraordinary expedition. And the │
│ listener is left to wonder if the protagonist actually ever made │
│ it. │
│ │
│ Ein Lied fⁿr Frau Thyssen-Henne(2000) │
│ Another title which reflects the everyday life of a film and TV │
│ composer. Exposures member M. Cretu felt so inspired by some of │
│ the work he had done for a tabloid magazine programme - │
│ portraying, among others, the wife of German business magnate │
│ Thyssen-Henne - that it spurred him to compose the, in a way │
│ æprivateÆ, æEin Lied fⁿr Frau Thyssen-HenneÆ (a song for Mrs. │
│ Thyssen-Henne). The attentive listener will note a certain sense │
│ of melancholy, maybe underlining CretuÆs obviously failed │
│ attempt to contact Mrs. Thyssen-Henne. A hint of tragic │
│ romanticism pervades all notes of this composition. │
│ │
│ Theme Of 'Ifs Ands & Buts'(2000) │
│ This trackÆs main theme might remind some listeners of Jan │
│ JelinekÆs æIfs Ands and ButsÆ. Nevertheless, sole authorship of │
│ this composition should be credited to the Exposures as this │
│ work was recorded and broadcast back in 2000, a good three years │
│ before the release of JelinekÆs thinly veiled plagiarism. Not │
│ only did Jan Jelinek fraudulently instrumentalise their band │
│ identity and collaboration on his 2003 album æLa Nouvelle │
│ PauverteÆ, but the Berlin artist also appropriated their │
│ intellectual property (this composition) for his own purposes û │
│ yet another proof of the unscrupulous exploitation of musicians │
│ by so-called æsample artistsÆ. It remains to be added that legal │
│ proceedings are under way. │
│ │
│ A Machine Under Influence / Sake Rock (2001) │
│ Together with éSake RockÆ this is one of æThe ExposuresÆ few │
│ available live recordings. Both compositions hail from 2001 but │
│ were recorded at different venues. æA Machine Under InfluenceÆ │
│ took place at the production hall of the Volkswagen plant in │
│ Wolfsburg. The idea behind the performance was to step up │
│ production by playing Exposures compositions. Unfortunately the │
│ anticipated increase left a lot to be desired, so this remained │
│ a one-off experiment. Nevertheless, on this day the basic design │
│ concept of the VW model æGolf Genesis CabrioÆ was designed and │
│ presented. Direct correlations to æA Machine Under InfluenceÆ │
│ cannot be corroborated. æSake RockÆ is yet another proof of │
│ their collaboration with Jan Jelinek: on this track, recorded at │
│ the Styrian city of Graz, they were accompanied by both Jelinek │
│ on the MS20 synthesiser and the resentment of the local │
│ audience. The latter fact also explains the fragmented editing │
│ of æSake RockÆ: thanks to modern audio technology the │
│ appreciative listener is spared the audienceÆs unfavourable │
│ reaction. │
│ │
│ Das Freundliche Rocksichord (2000) │
│ LetÆs return to the genre of film and TV music: éDas Freundliche │
│ RocksichordÆ (the friendly rocksichord) served as the soundtrack │
│ to an ethnology programme on æOriginal Hawaii and its RitesÆ, │
│ first broadcast in 2001. This documentary presented long lost │
│ visual evidence from the 1920s û a spectacular view of the │
│ Hawaiian fishing ritual. │
│ │
│ Post Crossings (2002) │
│ éPost CrossingsÆ is æThe ExposuresÆ only commissioned work for a │
│ weekly sports programme. The feature in question, however, was │
│ not of a sporting nature, but revealed the corrupt schemes at │
│ play in the realm of international cycle racing. In 2003 these │
│ revelations triggered a huge media frenzy. Which leads us to │
│ conclude: sensational journalism, accompanied by an equally │
│ sensational band. --eastdev.com │
