"disorder" is the prettiest noise we've ever heard. This album
abstracts the screaming of mistreated instruments into serene
textures of extreme volume. 10 tracks are continuously mixed
over 70 minutes; as each one surfaces there is a new
suggestion of immersive space.
Zeljko makes recordings of intense improvisations on string
instruments, piano, percussion and voice as his source
material. The approach is raw: every part of the instrument is
scraped, bowed and banged. These unusual and often harsh
sounds then become the blurred building blocks for gorgeous
psycho-acoustic cascades.
In ôinitiation,ö violent scratchings on a cello are layered
and processed until the sheer density of the resulting texture
collapses on itself, becoming peaceful and consonant. The
piano notes used on "gently" are only vaguely identifiable -
the sound is reinterpreted until rhythm and pitch disappear -
leaving only the timbre.
At high volume, "disorder" has an imposing sonic energy and
impressive nuance. It has been lovingly mastered - quiet
listenings can be pleasantly environmental. Driving fast on
the highway with the windows down, you might not even hear it.
"disorder" was recorded from winter 2002 to spring 2004 in
chicago, ohio, and new york city. His second album, Red, is
planned for Spring 2005 release.
Edition of 500.

REVIEWS
The looped piano superimpositions of "Gently" are alone worth
the price of this CD: they appear abruptly after long moments
of "harmonic noise" coming from a series of instrumental
patterns and sources (...I'm almost sure there is Steve Reich
hidden in "Dissolve"...) expressively altered by Zeljko
McMullen, a New York resident who works in the field of
musical phenomena applied to our conscious and unconscious
perceptions. For McMullen, noise - if treated like a
meditation process through reworking and transformation - has
the power to "pull one into another space" as it manifests
itself as pure experience. While the concept is not exactly
new, Zeljko shows finesse and explicitness during his
beautiful "rumble-to-discharge-to-heavenly-destruction"
cycles, through smothering hallucinations and infinite
displacements that will be appealing to fans of repetitive
music at medium difficulty level. Don't let these
considerations fool you anyway, because all through the
duration of "Disorder" McMullen comes out as a talented
autonomous personality and an entity which I expect to
materialize often in this saturated area of work.

A black CD (too bad it isn't a carbon CDR, by the way) printed
in black (glossy black on mat black so you actually can see
what's printed) into a black cardboard envelope with a
handpainted round black insert. Wow. Melodies slowly arise
from the noise drones as layers of strings emerge from chaotic
walls of synthesis then waves of static shatter the notes
away. Wow. All tracks are extremely different and somewhat
tightly fit into one another, exploiting and abusing all
frequencies within the sonic spectrum. Wow. As the liner notes
suggested, I first tried to listen to it at high volume ûbut
my loved one came back to work so I went downstairs to have
dinner with her and I left the record playing upstairs and it
felt just like the liner notes said it would: pleasantly
environmental. Wow. Seen Tarkovski's "Stalker"? This could be
the soundtrack to it. Wow. The record is well over the hour
mark and flows naturally from beginning to end just like
Schultze's "timewind" did, if Schultze had listened a lot to
Lab Report, that is. Wow wow. I'm not of the easily impressed
so when I say this record is exceptional you should believe
me.
