▀███▄ Magnetophone - Come On The Phone EP ▄███▀
artist : Magnetophone
title : Come On The Phone EP
date : 2000
label : 4AD (bad 2k07)
genre : Electronic
rls. date : May/2005
tracks : 04
bitrate : VBRkbps
size : 24,4 MB
"Magnetophone's brand of analog, glitch-textured
electronica falls from the same tree as that of Aphex
Twin, Autechre, and every other artist dabbling in IDM.
As such, much of the music on here is completely
interchangeable with those aforementioned artists. Play
any of the cuts on "Come On The Phone" for someone and
tell them it's some longlost Autechre b-side and they'd
probably believe you. So, if you take that on it's own
terms and are okay with it, you're still left with 4
tracks of pretty darn good IDM. Magnetophone certainly
breaks no new ground with these 4 songs, each of which
cops Autechre's brand of electronic gurgling almost as
well as Autechre does." - opuszine.com
"Magnetophone are Matt Saunders and John Hanson, they
both play keyboards of sorts. The title track is taken
from their forthcoming album 'I Guess Sometimes I Need To
Be Reminded Of How Much You Love Me'.
Like fellow Brummies Plone, Magnetophone create
instrumental electronica. While Plone's music is soothing
and uplifting, Magnetophone tend to be more frantic and
much more darker.
The opener 'Oh Darlin' sounds like a shortened To Rococo
Rot, it doesn't really make an impact like their epics,
as it doesn't have the time to evolve. Unlike the
energetic title track 'Come On The Phone' it starts of
extremely slowly and then builds up to a chaotic mash of
sounds before settling down again and gently drifting
into the next song 'Lubeecha'. 'Lubeecha' is nowhere near
as frenzied as the track before, it's a quiet soothing
track, which could easily be mistaken for a Plone track.
The record ends with 'Colourphone', which is similar to
'Come on the phone' in that the duo keep adding different
sounds and instruments to it, the end result is amazing.
If you persuaded Godspeed You Black Emperor to swap their
guitars for keyboards, it might sound a little bit like
this." - drownedinsound.com
Note: Sorry for the imperfection at end of last track.
But hey, vinyl is an imperfect medium after all.
