Renato Sellani was born in Senigallia (IT), he enters young in
contact with musicians like Piero Piccioni and Umberto
Cesari. Its first encounter with musicians of american jazz
happens playing for along time with the trumpetist Bill
Coleman. In 1954 he lands to Milan where it continues its activity
with the guitarist Frank Cerri and subsequently he
enters to make part of mythical quintetto Basso-Valdambini. Many
musicians of beyond the ocean look after him in order
to play together. The tournΦ are remembered with Lee Konitz in the
' 58 (with which he has made one series of
concerts in February ' 95), with Chet Baker (the most famous bugle
white woman of the jazz) in 1960, ' 61, ' 68, ' 69
and ' 70. He has accompanied many singers between which Mine,
Nicholas Arigliano, Fred Bongusto, Lilian Terry, Renata
Mauro, Helen Merril, Ginge Rogers and Sarah Vaughan. The encounter
with other famous musicians is continued with
Herb Geller to the Festival di Bled, Buddy Collette (with which it
has recorded some LP), Gerry Mulligan, Stephan
Grappelli, Ambrosetti Franc, Sergio Fanni, Eraldo VolontΦ, Tullio
De Piscopo and others. He has participated more times
to Umbria Jazz and others festival in Italy and foreign country.
He has made part of orchestra RAI of Gorni Kramer.
Intense its activity of composer for scene musics: "Puntila e il
suo servo Matti" of B. Brecht for Stable Theatre of Turin
with Corrado Breads, "Waiting for Godot" of Samuel Beckett for the
Small Theatre of Milan, "The six personages" for the
company of Buazzelli Vat, "Have you never tried in the warm water"
for the Clear company of Walter.
His most recent musics are for the companies of G. Tedeschi, Renzo
Montagnani and, for commedia the musical "Gig∞",
for the company of Ernesto Calindri. Numerous the television
participation between which like fixed host for three years
to the "The Circle of 12" and "Tortuga" on RAI3. Predilige to act
in the within of jazz the modern classic in small
formations, trio or pair (give slowly beyond 15 years in pair with
the contrabbassista Maximum Moriconi) or only,
because better adapted to the refined atmospheres and lyrics that
distinguish him. Recently for Philology series of
duetti has recorded one with some giants of the jazz
international: with the saxophonist Lee Konitz "Speakin Lowly"
and with the Brazilian guitarist Irio De Paula "Delicatessen",
moreover it has recorded with Phil Woods and Tony Scott.
He has recorded moreover various albums, he is in group that in
order only slowly, in which detaches also its qualities of
composer with the particularly evocative and refined sounds.
Sellani is today active with several formations, between which
they detach a classic trio and the duetti with Maximum
Morriconi and Enrico Rava. His lyric, oscillating style between
the tradition of the great pianist of the past and a
perennial push to the innovation, has caught up a refined and
unmistakable equilibrium that places Sellani in the
category of the musicians above the mode, making of one figure of
inarrivabile class in the panorama of the jazz
European.
