"I am the innovator, I am the innovator" - where to start? The Arabian
Prince's influence on the west coast electro/rap scene cannot be
underestimated. From being a member of The World Class Wreckin' Cru (he
was the key vocalist on the classic 'Surgery') to almost being in NWA
(on the sleeve of 'Straight Outta Compton' Arabian is the mysterious
sixth face looking down on whichever poor fool had just felt their
beatdown) - the man is a total legend. Back to when the original version
of this track was issued, 1984 to be exact - the LA scene was much
different, Egyptian Lover was the ruler and Russ Parr, aka Bobby Jimmy,
kept things surreal with his Rapsur label. 'Innovator', in its original
version (RP-10014), could set you back 150.00 - and that's if you can
find it! The first time I heard this roaring vocoder dancefloor
decimator was on the Dr.Dre mixed 'Hot Hip Hop On Hot Wax' comp on
Macola, a collectors item in it's own right - the sounds of 'Innovator'
have stayed with me since then. Now in 2005 the Arabian Prince returns
to burn with this ill reissue with bonus new versions. 'Innovator' and
'Innovative Life' throb like the sickest breath-heavy LA electro
classic, 'Egypt Egypt' comes to mind. The raw rasp rap that rightly
boasts that Arab is the innovator merges with the clatter rocking DMX
beats and the ill vocoder grind. Arabian can still churn out the dope
shit in 2005 like it's 1985, his 'Vocoder Beats' version strips the rap
vocals out, minimises the sounds without affecting the pressure hyping
the vocoder element, sick. Equally the DBS remix clocking in at over 8
minutes throws all kind of insane moves together fully flexing all that
the DMX drum machine and TR-808 can handle. Supposedly Dr.Dre just
handled the vocals on this joint repaying Arab who in similar fashion
hyped up Dre on 'Surgery'. Also check the dope sleeve featuring a
montage of wrecked boomboxes. After the Radio Crew repress I thought I'd
gone to heaven. Surely no one is going to beat this reissue now though
