Bio of Goodbye Blue Monday
By Doug Wagner
FOR SIGNONSANDIEGO
San Diego's Goodbye Blue Monday has been laying down its
inimitable blend of complex, moody post-punk on stages across
San Diego and beyond for years now, quietly amassing a
following enamored of songs that are as affecting as they are
angular. If you didn't get in on the ground floor, watching
these guys blow the doors off Scolari's Office and similar
venues, it's not too late to see what you've been missing.
The name Goodbye Blue Monday is excised from a 1973 Kurt
Vonnegut novel -- appropriate not only because 1973 marks the
early end of a generation that endured the various
"alternative" rock of years past and is now seeking something
new, but also because Vonnegut himself was always something of
an alchemist, infusing insightful comic wit with thoroughly
modern science fiction. GBM has managed to extract a mix of
elements from math rock, emo and indie that is similarly
modern in its synthesis, far more than just the sum of its
parts, making the band difficult to pigeonhole with
comparisons or genre tags. (If you must, think the visceral
mounting instrumentals of bands like Explosions in the Sky and
Godspeed you Black Emperor allied with the incisive vocal
attack of At the Drive In or the Mars Volta) This is also why
they're so darn good.
Like the bands before them whose accomplishments comprise the
tradition of San Diego's underground music scene, GBM's
success is due entirely to an ineffable quality, to a
uniqueness in sound and presentation that's hard-hitting
because it's baffling. The band's newest release, "Help Is On
the Way" is a culmination that promises to put them on the
map.
