██▓▓ Shuttling between his hometown of St. Paul, ██▓▓
██▓▓ Minnestota and the Brox, Freddie Schmid was ██▓▓
██▓▓ originally a Hip Hop DJ and producer (his ██▓▓
██▓▓ first production was a KRS-1 remix on 1998's ██▓▓
██▓▓ Scot La Rock tribute 'The Man And His ██▓▓
██▓▓ Machine') who rerouted to techno through an ██▓▓
██▓▓ enduring passion for Electro. A regular ██▓▓
██▓▓ fixture at Woody McBride's Depth Probe ██▓▓
██▓▓ nights in Minneapolis, as Freddie Fresh he ██▓▓
██▓▓ has been one of the most prolific Techno ██▓▓
██▓▓ producers oin the Midwest, responsible for ██▓▓
██▓▓ over 150 releases on labels such as Drop ██▓▓
██▓▓ Bass Network, Emergency Broadcast and his ██▓▓
██▓▓ own Analog imprint. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ Under the name Modulator, he released two ██▓▓
██▓▓ early classic's on Damon Wild's Experimental ██▓▓
██▓▓ label - "Modulator" and the "Painkiller EP" ██▓▓
██▓▓ - that deftly articulated both his own wide ██▓▓
██▓▓ ranging articulate tastes and the blitzkrieg ██▓▓
██▓▓ hard Acid sound that earned Fresh and a ██▓▓
██▓▓ number of other producers from the region ██▓▓
██▓▓ the soubriquet of "the Midwest Hardcorps". ██▓▓
██▓▓ Latere singles on Communique, Proper & Eye Q ██▓▓
██▓▓ pushed in a variety of different directions, ██▓▓
██▓▓ though Fresh's trademark taut drums and bass ██▓▓
██▓▓ formula survived intact. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ It was producer Tim Taylor who told him ██▓▓
██▓▓ that, someday, he would make a classic by ██▓▓
██▓▓ accident. The chance remark translated ██▓▓
██▓▓ itself into the title of his debut for ██▓▓
██▓▓ Harthouse / Eye Q, "Accidentally Classic" ██▓▓
██▓▓ (1996). Written after a trip to Puerto Rico, ██▓▓
██▓▓ the album drew from a mix of influences ██▓▓
██▓▓ ranging from the Latin Rascals to Electro ██▓▓
██▓▓ and Techno, though his collection of vintage ██▓▓
██▓▓ analogue synths (Fresh still records ██▓▓
██▓▓ everything live to tape without the aid of ██▓▓
██▓▓ computers or sequencers) was also much in ██▓▓
██▓▓ evidence. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ Under the name Nitrate, Fresh recorded more ██▓▓
██▓▓ straightforward "Acid Stucker" (1996) for ██▓▓
██▓▓ Labworks though the fascination with mutoid ██▓▓
██▓▓ Electro was still apparant. As the Electro ██▓▓
██▓▓ revival got firmly underway, Fresh became an ██▓▓
██▓▓ increasing presence on European dancefloors ██▓▓
██▓▓ with releases such as "Drum Lesson", the ██▓▓
██▓▓ "Barrio Grooves EP" and "Quiver" all ██▓▓
██▓▓ becoming minor underground hits. A ██▓▓
██▓▓ collaberation with FatBoy Slim on "Sound Of ██▓▓
██▓▓ Milwaukee" helped to provide an entry into ██▓▓
██▓▓ the mainstream, but it was a show for Radio ██▓▓
██▓▓ One "Essential Mix", early in 1998 which ██▓▓
██▓▓ provided the best introduction to his ██▓▓
██▓▓ singular talent. Blending Electro classics ██▓▓
██▓▓ from Warp 9 and Doug E Fresh with his own ██▓▓
██▓▓ tracks and an eclectic fusion which included ██▓▓
██▓▓ everything from Jeff Mills to Art Of Noise, ██▓▓
██▓▓ it was a spell binding set which was ██▓▓
██▓▓ nominated by Muzik as one of the year's ██▓▓
██▓▓ best. ██▓▓

██▓▓ "The Last True Family Man" (1999) was a ██▓▓
██▓▓ solid follow-up to his Eye Q debut, though ██▓▓
██▓▓ "Analog Space Funk" (1999) - a collection of ██▓▓
██▓▓ excerpts from Fresh's Analog label - also ██▓▓
██▓▓ provided a worthwhile document of the ██▓▓
██▓▓ producer's musical whereabouts during the ██▓▓
