Recorded at Five Towns College, Long Island, New York in
January 1999.
Bass player Chris Dahlgren, besides being a noted
instrumentalist, is also a fine writer. This set of seven
original compositions finds him, leading a quartet with two
saxophones (Rob Brown and Peter Epstein) and a percussionist
(Satoshi Takeishi). The dual reed lines snake around nicely
over the inventive yet solid rhythmic bed. There's even a
folk-like bearing to the music, owing in part to it's chamber
like quietude. Having composed extensively for dance, theater
and television, Dahlgren imbues his writing with a discreet
sense of character. "The Gadfly," which opens the set, has a
smartly strutting bearing, while "The Angels Of Hartwell"
offers gorgeously undulating subtleties. He melds a firm stand
in formalism with a love of other idioms, from blues to folk
dances. Takeishi's approach to the drums and percussion adds
an element of exotic and distant geographies over the course
of the album as a whole.
