:: ::
:: Highland is a band which plays a style that many would least ::
:: expect judging by the band's name. Highland brings something ::
:: new to the table by blending different styles of death ::
:: metal, black metal, thrash, and progressive while paying ::
:: homage to the old school extreme metal bands that have paved ::
:: the way and helped other bands shape their sound. ::
:: ::
:: First impressions listening to the self-titled album may ::
:: lead to the listener to think this is just some ordinary ::
:: black metal recording, but they'll soon realize they are in ::
:: for quite a twist when the lead vocalist begins alternating ::
:: high-pitched screams with low death growls that sound ::
:: similar to ┼kerfeld of Opeth. The drums also start off mid- ::
:: tempo, but work their way up to incorporating fast, almost ::
:: spastic blast beat sections synchronized with the abrupt ::
:: changes in melody and tempo lead by the guitar sections. ::
:: ::
:: The guitar sections are well written with subtle goodies ::
:: only a few people (mostly musicians) will be able to pick up ::
:: on, such as the eerie harmonization of one guitar playing a ::
:: sequence of chords while the other is playing a sequence of ::
:: tremolo riffs that can be heard throughout the record. There ::
:: are a few clean guitar parts, some reminiscent of ::
:: Dissection's style of incorporating clean guitars in between ::
:: fast, distorted sections. ::
:: ::
:: The drums are tight. An excellent display of musicianship by ::
:: the drummer can be heard in the intro for Cimmerian Waves in ::
:: Abyssal Space as he combines snare, hi-hat, and kick to the ::
:: tune of the clean guitar sections - it's quite difficult to ::
:: explain which is why it is recommended for one to listen for ::
:: themselves. ::
:: ::
:: The sound production is great. The guitars, vocals, and ::
:: drums fit well in the mix, but the bass has little presence. ::
:: Although it's quite understandable considering the band ::
:: lacks having a full-time bass player, it would be great to ::
:: have a bassist contribute something unique to the ::
:: harmonizing guitars as well as complement the drums by ::
:: adding a little more "punch" to its delivery. ::
:: ::
:: Overall, this is a fantastic first release by Highland. It ::
:: sure adds something unique to the black/death metal genre ::
:: and would make a great addition to any avid metal fan's ::
:: collection. ::
