Allow me to waffle a bit about one of my favourite pieces of music here.
Winter In July is quite simply one of the most beautiful heart-breaking
tunes I have ever heard. Some time post '88/89 acid house and pre rave
there was a fantastic time in the UK music scene which was kick started
by Nelle Hooper and Jazzy B and the sound they popularised propelled
the likes of Soul II Soul into the worldwide music stratosphere. The music
was soulful and spiritual yet with dance sensibility and massive crossover
appeal. A lot of record in 1990 and 1991 immitated that sound and you
couldn't get away from it on the radio and the charts. Even the US of A
warmed up to it. A product of acid house and creator of seminal Beat Dis,
Bomb The Bass man Tim Simenon created this haunting beauty with Guy
Sigsworth and it still remains and enduring, if slightly forgotten, classic.
With it's uplifting lyrics and soaring melody cratfmanship was never better;
ten years later it still sounds amazing. Tim Simenon further diversified his
sound later and went on to produce Depeche Mode among many others and so did
Guy Sigsworth, who worked with Madonna, Bjork and most recently produced
one of the best (if not the best) pop albums of 2002 with Imogen Heap aka
Frou Frou (Details). True masterpiece.... if I ever heard one...
Oh, and the bonus track Dune Buggy Attack isn't too shabby either!
