About six years ago, believe it or not, Paul Oakenfold's DJ sets and
productions were absoluely fantastic. Many will remember his legendary
BBC Radio 1 'Goa Mix' Essential Mix back in December 1994 with very
fond memories indeed. It was this mix along with his highly sucessful
Perfecto label which propelled him into the public eye and gained him
much deserved status.
Unfortunately this status put him straight into the 'superstar' DJ
catagory which is where Paul has gradually lost his head up his ass.
His sets are now about as weak as Judge Jules and his productions are
going through re-issues like there's no tomorrow. I mean how many mixes
of 'Bullet In A Gun' do we need before someone pops a bullet in their
gun and blows his head off ... hehe ;)
Fortunately those of you who have been into the dance music scene from
the very early 90's will know that Paul Oakenfold and his studio
partner, Steve Osborne have been behind some amazing tracks in their
mid 90's prime.
Here I present to you another of my personal all-time favourites and
the very first release on the Perfecto 'Fluoro' offshoot in 1995. Now
those of you with an original Mixmag tracklisting of Oakenfold's 'Goa
Mix' from 1994 will probably know this track as 'Sun' by Rise. This was
the working title for the track and why he changed it to 'Virus' is
anybody's guess.
Ignore the 'Jam El Mar' and 'MWNN' remixes and head straight for the
original 'Oakenfold/Osborne' mix. I'm not saying that the first two are
crap i'm just saying that they are not a patch on the stunning original
and why Paul chose to place it third is anyone's guess - he's a strange
guy ;o)
Anyway this track simply an astounding showcase of what I like to regard
as 'Oakenfold's true talents'. The only two words you could possibly use
to describe this track are "blissed-out". If Paul had kept the working
title then the track would have been called "sunrise" and let's face it
after one listen the perfect backdrop to this track would most certainly
be a sunrise or even a sunset. Beautiful soft percussion and mellow
analogue sequences float to combine a heavenly soundscape that's going
to melt any soul.
I could go on forever about the original 'Oakenfold/Osborne' mix because
I've grown-up with it and it brings back so many fantastic memories.
'Sun' is certainly in my top 5 of all time and I hope it finds a place
in yours.
All the best and have a great New Year !!!!
