| |
| Let's focus on the Kojak crew... |
| |
| "Kojak is an exception in French House. The group managed to change |
| the established way a dance music combo was to be performed, with |
| shadows hidden behind walls of technological equipment. |
| |
| Kojak was a model for a new school. A group clearly devoted to the |
| virtues of house music, and who managed to move its field of |
| action from the studio to the stage, from the cold machines to |
| the sweat of a concert. |
| |
| Kojak brought the show onto the French House stage. Having brought |
| down the barriers between different genres ( house and hip-hop, |
| pop and soul), on "Crime in the City", their first album |
| released four years ago, the duo offers us with its second album |
| "every room on every floor" a key record full of ambition, |
| eclectic, mature and rid of complexes. But, for the record. |
| |
| In 1993, Gregoire Galian is an sound engineer for the jazz concert |
| venue the "Passage du Nord Ouest". For some time he had worked in |
| hardcore rock and will be remembered in the underground straight |
| scene that rubs shoulders with groups like Fugazi, Quicksand or |
| Prohibition. |
| |
| At that time Paris was under the Rave craze and nobody could |
| ignore it anymore.Greg switched to techno after going to a rave in |
| an abandoned warehouse in Villeneuve St Georges. Amid 4000 |
| people, lost in the halo of a laser, Gregoire discovers the most |
| cutting edge electronic sound played by a certain Jeff Mills. It |
| was to be this introduction, his first wake-up call that made him |
| change his prerogatives a few weeks later, and the rock concerts |
| were replaced by techno. |
| |
| Gregoire experienced the Paris rave scene boom as a flash. He is, |
| in that manner, no more different than thousands of anonymous |
| dancers who, struck by the aestheticism and the electronic sound, |
| flipped from their monotonous nights for the elation-exhilaration |
| of Saturday evening raves. |
| |
| Gregoire trades in his Marshall amp. and guitar for a pair of TB |
| 303 et TR 909, discovers an Akai S1000 sample and a 16 track |
| mixing desk. There, in a one room flat in the west of Paris, he |
| experiences his own techno and creates his own label : Nekko |
| Records, on which he releases his first productions. |
| Gregoire : "beyond the form, what truly marked the difference |
| between techno and rock was that the musicians choose to stand |
| back and focused on their music. The discs were sometimes only |
| numbered without mentioning the artist. It was a very alternative |
| attitude, then progressively Djs and musicians revealed their |
| faces". |
| |
| This culture of the dance scene independence opened a field |
| unhoped for a small French house label could easily expect to sell |
| 4000 copies of a record. Nekko Records then released two EP |
| 12 inch up to the moment when the label received a demo tape. The |
| author was Cyril Vaschetto, Dj Vas on stage. |
| |
| He's a hip hop Dj, who started with a rap combo from Paris called |
| Mauvaize Graine. Vas did not experience the Paris rave boom, |
| however he fed on another branch: the soul and hip hop culture, |
| becoming one of the finest connoisseurs, and interesting himself |
| as an erudite to a wide musical world : from masters of hip hop Dj |
| Premier and Jeru the Damaja, to Groover Washington Jr and |
| Gil Scott Heron, as well as the aesthetes Common or Dj Vadim. Both |
| men meet, with great pleasure and agree to work on Dj Vas EP. |
| Impulsively the leave for a house in Brittany with machines, |
| vinyls, a dog and a bit of food, in this kind of home in which |
| only electricity is still working. What they discover during their |
| stay in Brittany is what they have in common and that rock and |
| techno backgrounds can work together especially with funk and soul |
| roots.s |
| |
| The result of this mix is a free and generous house, with |
| contagious energy, which naturally flows toward hip hop tones. |
| Kojak is this combo, reduced to these two major participants, |
| willingly open, generous and not hesitating to mix hip hop, house, |
| dub and the soul lyrics of their MC together. |
| |
| Because Kojak, freshly baptised, was going to open all different |
| possible fields towards a new vision of house: on stage. However |
| the formation of a group in the house scene remained atypical. |
| In this world made of individualities one was reminded of a rock |
| combo. Gregoire : "we started working in the studio and playing |
| live at the same time. After one month in studio we had written |
| enough to be able to give 45- minute performances; then I was |
| offered a date for a gig in a club in Brittany. Cyril agreed to |
| follow me in this adventure and three days after our first concert |
| we met Jayhem, who has stayed with us since as our MC. |
| |
| Jayhem is a soul singer. With him Kojak developed an on- stage |
| dynamic and spontaneous attitude ,which remains its strength. |
| Kojak released its first EP "Funky House For Your Kunkt |
| Head" on Nekko; their first attempt sells 4000 copies in a few |
| weeks. |
| |
| While they were at it, Kojak completed the recording of their |
| first album "Crime in The City ", signed on the Pro-zak label and |
| there is a rumour going that French house held its first house |
| stage combo there. [...] |
| |
| However it is hard for a musician to stop performing in front of |
| an audience, Kojak has crafted another element of their skills : |
| Djing. From the Rex club to Queen, Kojak Soundsystem was one of |
| the main Paris club venues of these last two years, where the |
| group revealed its eclectic tastes playing house, techno, funk, |
| drum'n'bass, hip-hop, reggae or broken beat in the same gig and |
| increasing in the same time their audience base". |
