Considering that Derrida died last year and that according to
avant-garde cuisine even tortilla can be served in wine
glasses, we could say that Tarentel seem to be looking for
their essence little by little, walking along a deconstruction
path with small steps and firm determination. Because in their
new EP in Acuarela, it's not easy to recognise those whom
started up as a five-member group back in 1998, combining
cinematic post rock with lashings of irate slowcore and
psychedelic loops. A year later, "From Bone to Satellite" was
their splendid debut album in Temporary Residence, a label that
has turned out to have an keen sense for pinpointing new
tensions and movements in modern post rock. But from then until
2005 this San Francisco band have undergone many changes:
they've produced LPs for such renowned labels as Neurot and
Staalplaat, mutated and expanded and dedicated themselves
almost obsessively to small formats. That's how Tarentel got to
where they are today, a "how" rather than a "what", which is
perfectly illustrated in their last album for Temporary
Residence, "We Move Through Weather" and in the EP edited by
Acuarela. In "Ghost Weight" they dedicate 30 minutes to four
tracks in which they draw landscapes amidst masses of crackling
noise, simulate a calm pulse with soft guitars and distant
drums, get lost in the shadows and re-emerge to the beat of dry
drumming and frontline feedback. A less-is-more that has little
to do with less.
