| Tominaga (aka UK-based producer Sushi Chanrai) apparently first |
| developed her studio skills working in a Bollywood-style film |
| studio in Bombay during the nineties, before the 'lack of dance |
| culture' she experienced growing up in England & Nigeria compelled |
| her to return to London, where she began working with a diverse |
| range of artists including The Cure and All Saints. This debut 12" |
| from Chanrai under the Tominaga moniker It's Your Time features |
| the vocal abilities of Eska, who has performed at Gilles |
| Peterson's 'Heavy Hitters' night as well as attracted the |
| attention of such London broken-beat figures as Seiji and IG |
| Culture. |

| On the A-side of this 12" the Original mix of It's Your Time |
| presents the most lengthy version here, with Eska's rich smooth |
| soul vocals sliding over a lush downtempo backdrop of slow |
| clicking broken beats that's coloured with delicate jazzy keyboard |
| runs, shimmering Philly soul string flourishes and vast, cavernous |
| synthetic bass drops, evoking a more slowed-down version of |
| Slope's crisp broken-beat soul fusions. Middlefield make things |
| even more lush and chilled-out, sprinkling some cosmic-sounding |
| washes of twinkling percussion and wafting soul pads beneath |
| Eska's dubbed-out vocals, whilst exchanging the originalÆs crisp |
| broken-beat rhythms for a soft-focus wander into hiphop-soul |
| beats that calls to mind comparisons with the softer moments of |
| Jugglin' Records, but just when you think you've got it pinned |
| down, the rhythms suddenly accelerate up to broken-beat house |
| tempos, delayed handclaps, Moog synths and lush pads floating over |
| a backdrop of vaguely Latin rhythms. |

| On the flip, Compost Records artist Alex Attias provides my |
| favourite of the various reworkings here, with his Freedom Soundz |
| mix, injecting some squelchy electro-house groove together with |
| flecks of Blondie-esque slap bass and vaguely electroclash synth |
| stabs curving their sinuous way around Eska's vocal in a way that |
| perfectly transposes the track away from jazzy broken-beat and |
| back towards a nocturnal electro-tinged dancefloor. Finally, Sweet |
| Abraham opts for a tech-edged two-step approach on his Depth mix |
| of It's Your Time, dubbing Eska's vocal out to just a shimmering |
| echo, whilst digitally-manipulated string samples and looped horns |
| spin their way over the metallic-sounding broken rhythms and |
| synthetic bass swells in a style that calls to mind Domu and Bugz |
| In The Attic. An excellent debut 12" from Chanrai under her |
| Tominaga project name, complete with quality remixes that each |
| manage to drag the original into a place considerably different. |
| If you're a fan of either aforementioned jazzy broken-beat outfit, |
| you should definitely check this one out. |
