about the label:
1. Who runs the label and why did you start?
Mark O Sullivan (dk7/The Mighty Quark), Shane Johnson and Greg Dowling
(Fish Go Deep). Even though Mark lives in Stockholm he still has his
roots in his home town of Cork in Ireland. Seeing as Cork is
European Capital of Culture 2005 Mark, Shane and Greg thought it would
be a good idea (and about time) to start a label based there. So
basically the label was started out of necessity. A studio
collaboration between the three of us - "Culture Bug" - was the spark
that found a common ground and sound. Ork now has a distribution deal
with Intergroove in Germany.
2. What is the rooster, how did it come together and who are those people?
The first 12 inch, "Culture Bug", under the name THE MIGHTY FISH is a
collaboration between Shane, Greg and Mark. The vocal is in Cork slang
which adds a private sense of humour for us to the track. For the next
release, "DISCO BLOOD", Mark collaborates with his DK7 partner, Jesper
Dahlback. For future releases we will have Fish Go Deep, some new Irish
talent plus a few suprises that we cannot divulge at the moment.
3. What is your musical vision for the label?
To release raw, funky electronic music with no regard for pigeon holes.
To find great artists and producers that have yet to be discovered.
4. Where are you based, and... does this influence the music?
Mark: I am based in Stockholm, a city that has a wealth of producers and
a pretty boring club scene. I for some reason find this situation
inspiring, meeting some great producers and working with them.
Shane: We have the opposite problem in Cork. We've had a strong club
scene dating back to the late 1980s. Virtually every underground dj
of note has played here over the years and we've had some great
home-grown residencies as well. What Cork is short of is producers
and we're hoping that Ork will encourage some of them out of
their studios and onto a bigger stage.
