you can hardly accuse the jaam trio, nuno filipe, paulo nascimento
and phil quenum, of being prolific: this is only the fourth
release on their mutant soul label, which was established almost
two years ago. that's hardly a criticism though, with releases as
strong as their previous three. last time out, accompanied by eska
(a vocalist with a burgeoning reputation), they attracted their
strongest support yet: mixmaster morris, richard dorfmeister and
rainer truby all indicated that they had had strong reactions to
either the original work, or jamie odell a.k.a. jimpster's fine
re-works. jimpster's freerange records labelmate, shur-i-kan,
steps up on remix duties this time with vocals contributed by key
recordings singer, simbad. just for you, in its original guise,
sees a heavy, rumbling groove topped off with nicely understated
sax. shur-i-kan tightens up the groove and gives it greater
impetus. un peu, on the flip, is more melancholy with spoken-word
french vocals throughout. this time shur-i-kan opts for off-kilter
4/4 patterns and loops the vocal resulting in a deceptively quick,
dancefloor-oriented gem. the fourth volume of the blue series has
made a fantastic start with the dj's - shur-i-kan's two remixes in
particular are proving popular with the likes of mr scruff, ltj
bukem , leo elstob (soulsonic), russ gabriel, fabrice lig (f-com)
& ben watt (lazy dog).
reviews
"two more killer cuts from two of east london's rising stars,
shur-i-kan and simbad. 'just for you'is all deep rumbling
basslines and smooth sax action, and there's a tighter punchier
mix of the same track by shur-i-kan." 5/5
