As the leader of the seminal pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz, a
producer, and a solo artist, Nick Lowe held considerable influence
over the development of punk rock. With the Brinsleys, Lowe began a
back-to-basics movement that flowered into punk rock in the late
'70s. As the house producer for Stiff, he recorded many seminal
records by the likes of the Damned, Elvis Costello, and the
Pretenders. His rough, ragged production style earned him the
nickname "Basher" and also established the amateurish, D.I.Y.
aesthetics of punk.
Lowe's "The Abominable Showman" was recorded with his post-Rockpile touring
band Noise To Go. Following the blueprint of Rockpile, the band also
featured a second lead vocalist in erstwhile Ace frontman Paul Carrack and
had been featured on the Lowe-produced Carrack album Suburban Voodoo (as
well as on this album's duet 'Wish You Were Here'). This unit could play
hard driving rock & roll and soulful pop music, all in evidence here from
the opener (and concert favorite) "Raging Eyes" to the full on pop-soul of
"Time Wounds All Heels". And the band barnstormed the USA opening for the
likes of The Cars and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers which yields the bonus
45 of live tracks from Cleveland's Agora.
Yep Roc is now releasing all Lowe's album's in remastered editions with
bonus tracks, this one comes with a bonus 45 of live tracks and digital
download card, and the CD has the live tracks included as bonus tracks.
