     The Inmates - Bill Hurley (vocals), Peter Gunn (guitar), Tony Oliver
     (guitar), Ben Donnelly (bass) and Jim Russell (drums) - emerged in the late
     70's as a UK R&B group in the style of Dr. Feelgood. Their adaptation of
     "Dirty Water", a garage-band classic originally recorded by The Standells,
     led to The Inmates' debut album. In common with several similarly styled
     groups, the quintet was unable to transfer their live excitement onto
     record, and despite other promising collections, the band was restricted to
     a narrow, pub rock-influenced ghetto. Singer Bill Hurley recorded the solo
     "Double Agent" in 1985, but its gritty mixture of soul and R&B classics
     fared no better than those of the parent group. "Meet The Beatles, Live In
     Paris" is a set of Beatles songs performed in a hard R&B and Chicago blues
     vein.

     This remastered box features their first three albums, "First Offence"
     (1979), "Shot In The Dark" (1980) and "Heatwave In Alaska" (1982), the
     first pair with Feelgoods producer Vic Maile. Covers took in everyone from
     the Pretty Things to soul great Arthur Conley. The band are best known here
     for minor hit "The Walk" and "Alaska" was produced by Stuart Colman, in the
     hope that, after their Stateside glory, some of the success he was having
     with ShakinÆ Stevens would rub off for them at home. No such luck, despite
     a bouncier, less gritty sound and songs from as varied sources as Phil
     Everly and Difford/Tilbrook, and they never quite cemented their early
     position.

     Eight bonus tracks, mostly singles, include "Tallahassie Lassie", every bit
     as splendid as the famed version by The FlaminÆ Groovies, with whom The
     Inmates shared a love of outsized shades and unsung R&B.
