A very strange set of Polish jazz - with influences that touch on
the exotic! Ostensibly, the group has a straighter swing-based
groove, but there's also some moments on the set that are produced
with lots of strange effects and instrumentation -- coming across
with rich colors and tones, a deeply expressive and sometimes
nostalgic feel, and some occasional whimsy that makes for a really
playful little set! The rhythms often hit a slight modal groove -
dancing around in angular lines that roll out with the spirit of the
MPS generation. And the instrumentation is even more compelling -
with strong work from group leader, trombonist Andrzej Brzeski, plus
an additional lineup that includes alto sax, bass, cello, and
classical guitar. The crossing of bass, cello, and guitar strings
creates these flowing, almost pillowy sounds that are totally great
- but the album's never soft or dreamy, as Brzeski's horn work
maintains an edge throughout - and really pushes the energy of the
set! The album includes a sweeping 13 minute reading of "Malaguena",
the warmly jazzy "Uncle Leo's Intimate Life", and the wild psych-ish
"Auntie's Chitchat".

After the group 1st rehearsals in 1968, I thought it's a paradox to
play without drums, with a bassoon, and cello with hums and groans in
bebop diminished fifths. At that time, the very sound combination of
the bassoon, trombone, cello and bass made me happy and inspired me
to make some musical tricks and jokes on the borderline of jazz and
folk. I don't hesitate to write pieces in the spirit of Polish folk
music, to draw original examples from the rich sources of folklore,
Polish and European. Continuing our work in 1971, with some changes
in instrumentation (alto sax, trombone, cello, bass and guitar), we
realized that our sound resembles a folk band manned with modern
jazzmen. However, I think that this is where our originality lies,
and the lack of drums makes no difference to the soloists who can
swing enough by themselves.
