Deine Lakaien haben in den letzten 30 Jahren stets ihren
eigenen Weg gefunden, abseits vom im MusikgeschΣft
ueblichen und haben um aeBest-ofô-Kompilierungen bisher
einen grossen Bogen gemacht. Dennoch erscheint jetzt mit
äXXX û The 30 Years Retrospectiveô eine Art äBest-ofô
Edition. Das ist nur ein scheinbarer Widerspruch, denn
auch mit dieser Ver÷ffentlichung interpretieren Deine
Lakaien gΣngige Vorstellungen auf ihre eigene Weise.
Die erste CD der Box enthaelt erwartungsgemaess die
bekannten Klassiker des Duos:"Colour-ise", "Dark Star",
"Reincarnation" aus der fruehen Schaffensperiode sind
selbstverstaendlich dabei, ab dem fuenften Studioalbum
"Kasmodiah" ist die Auswahl dann an den
Singleauskopplungen festgemacht. Dagegen praesentiert die
zweite CD die äheimlichenô Hits der beiden Kuenstler
selbst. Obwohl chronologisch sortiert, ergibt sich hier
tatsaechlich eine in sich schluessige und durchaus
harmonische eigenstaendige Veroeffentlichung.
Langjaehrige Fans wird es dabei nicht ueberraschen, dass
das von der Chartplatzierung her erfolgreichste Album
dabei nur mit einem Titel û "Kasmodiah" eben û vertreten
ist. Dieser ist dann auch direkt in ein neues
harmonisches Gewand gekleidet, was der intimen IntensitΣt
dieses Stueckes aber keinen Abbruch tut. Aber auch
Zuh÷rer, die mit dem Lakaien-Werk noch nicht vollstaendig
vertraut sind, koennen sich einen Eindruck von der
Variabilitaet der Gruppe verschaffen: Die neuen Versionen
von äColour-izeô und äLove Me To The Endô lassen sich
direkt mit den Originalversionen auf der ersten CD
vergleichen und werden auch Fans positiv ueberraschen.
Waehrend sich die 2-CD Edition eher an Neueinsteiger
richtet, sollten Fans sich auf jeden Fall die 4-CD
Edition goennen, denn die letzten zwei CDs sind einfach
umwerfend! Zunaechst laesst sich feststellen, dass
"Crystal Palace" ganz anders haette ausfallen koennen.
Allein die Haelfte der zehn bisher unveroeffentlichten
Songs auf CD3 stammt aus der Produktionszeit dieses
letzten Lakaien-Albums und steht qualitativ auf einer
Stufe mit den Stuecken, die auf dem Album finden. "Black
Cat" kann mit seinem wunderbaren Hook dem bekannten
Tanzflaechenfeger "Farewell" locker Konkurrenz machen.
"WhatÆs on Your Mind" und "Frozen Screams" sind typisch
treibende Lakaien-Balladen, wobei letzteres eher
ungewohnte Brueche zeigt, waehrend das erstere Stueck
einen buchstaeblich in den Arm nimmt. "One By One"
besticht durch poetische Weite, Synthesizer zwischen
Rauschen und kuehlen Harmonien verursachen Gaensehaut und
lassen den Wunsch aufkommen, dieses Stueck moege sich
doch bitte, bitte im Repertoire der kommenden
Retrospektive-Konzerte finden. Auch sonst laesst sich auf
dieser Scheibe viel Dunkles und Experimentelles aus
verschiedensten Perioden der letzten 30 Jahre entdecken.
Dazu gesellt sich eines der zwei Covers, die Deine
Lakaien je aufgenommen haben û äItÆs Alright Maô vom
diesjaehrigen Literaturnobelpreistraeger Bob Dylan.
Abgeschlossen wird die Sammlung mit bisher
unveroeffentlichten Live-Aufnahmen, die die letzte CD
fuellen. Darunter finden sich absolute Juwelen, von denen
man froh ist, dass sie fuer die Ewigkeit konserviert
wurden. Kam "Lass Mich" auf "Kasmodiah" vielen
befremdlich vor, so war doch die Live-Performance absolut
schluessig, wie hier ueberzeugend festgehalten.
"Fruehlingstraum" ist in der Acoustic-Variante einfach
atemberaubend schoen. Das einmalige Konzert in der Neuen
Nationalgalerie von dem die Aufnahme stammt, liegt zwar
schon 15 Jahre zurueck, aber die Erinnerung daran wird
nicht zuletzt auch lebendig durch "Generators". Beide
Stuecke waren seit dem nicht mehr im Programm der
Acoustic-Konzerte û schade eigentlich. "Pilgrim" hat sich
wΣhrend der Crystal Palace-Tour stark entwickelt, wie das
bei den Live-Darbietungen von Deine Lakaien haeufiger
vorkommt. Hier ist die ausgereifte, wirklich wunderbare
Endvariante zu hoeren. Die Retrospektive klingt aus mit,
und das wird die Fanherzen hoeher schlagen lassen, mit
den fruehen Live-Aufnahmen von "On The Way To Narmada"
und "Bells Of Another Land".

Deine Lakaien always found their own way in the past 30
years, aside from the usual paths in music business, and
have given ôbest-ofö compilations a wide berth until
today. Nevertheless, a kind of ôbest-ofö edition is now
released with ôXXX û The 30 Years Retrospectiveö. But
this only seems to be a contradiction, because also with
this release, Deine Lakaien interpret popular notions in
their own way.
The first CD contains the well-known classics of the duo
as expected: Of course ôColour-izeö, ôDark Starö,
ôReincarnationö from the early creative period are
present. Starting with the fifth studio album ôKasmodiahö
the selection is derived from the single releases. In
contrast, the second CD features the ôsecretö hits of the
two artists themselves. Though in chronological order,
this results in a coherent and harmonic release on its
own.
Longtime fans will not be surprised that the most
successful album with regard to chart position is
represented by one title only û ôKasmodiahö itself. This
song shows a new harmonic guise without losing its
intimate intension. But also the audience that is not yet
as familiar with the works of Deine Lakaien will get an
impression of the variability of the band: The new
versions of ôColour-izeö and ôLove Me To The Endö can be
directly compared to the originals on the first CD and
will positively surprise fans as well.
While the 2-CD edition addresses Lakaien-newbies, fans
should treat themselves with the 4-CD edition, since the
last two CDs are simply stunning! For a start, the album
ôCrystal Palaceö could have sounded very differently.
Half of the ten songs on CD3 previously unreleased have
been produced during the recording time of the last album
of Deine Lakaien, and are of the same quality as the
songs of the album. ôBlack Catö has a truly wonderful
hook and competes easily with the dance floor filler
ôFarewellö. ôWhatÆs on Your Mindö and ôFrozen Screamsö
are typically driving Lakaien-ballades, where the latter
reveals unusual cracks, while the former literally
embraces you. ôOne By Oneö convinces through poetic
vastness, synthesizers between noise and cold harmonies
result in goose bubbles and lead to the strong desire
that this piece should be part of the coming
Retrospective-concerts, please! But also many dark and
experimental songs from all kinds of different creative
periods of the past 30 years are to be discovered on the
disc. The cherry on the cake is perhaps one of the two
only cover songs Deine Lakaien ever recorded û ôItÆs
Alright Maö from this yearÆs Nobel laureate in literature
Bob Dylan.
The collection closes with until today unreleased live
recordings on the last CD. Amongst those, are absolute
gems that are now captured for eternity to everybodyÆs
joy. ôLass Michö from ôKasmodiahö sounding strange to
quite some people, for instance sounded live totally
convincing as proved here. ôFrⁿhlingstraumö in the
acoustic version is breathtakingly beautiful. The
recoding is from the singular concert in the Neue
Nationalgalerie that happened 15 years ago. But
reminiscence is revived last but not least by
ôGeneratorsö. Both pieces were not part of the ôAcousticö
concerts since then û what a pity! ôPilgimö showed a
strong development during the Crystal-Palace Tour as it
often happens with live-performances of Deine Lakaien.
Here, the matured, really gorgeous final version is
presented. The retrospective concludes û fanÆs hearts
will beat wild û with the early live recordings from ôOn
The Way To Narmadaö and ôBells Of Another Landö.
