With Elegant Systems, Kirk DeGiorgio (aka As One) takes techno back
to its early-'80s roots, constructing a sci-fi fusion of jazz,
electronics and soul, rather than migraine-inducing loops of fury.
Opener "Rumours" sets the tone, all warm chords, robot beats and
flashes of dark energy; DeGiorgio shoots his tracks through with
melody and feeling ù some sharp and syncopated, others hazy and
gloopy ù like a kung-fu master doing a little water boxing. Sure, it
has a throwback sound in certain places, but when it's executed with
this much skill, love and care, you can't help but be seduced.
