Continuing along the gender-defined theme established with their
"The Empresses Of Africa" compilation, the folks at Wrasse Records
have released "The Emperors Of Africa". This two-CD set includes 31
songs intended to represent 'the very best of male musicians' in
Africa. Popular artists from Senegal (e.g., Ismael Lo, Baaba Maal,
and Youssou N'Dour), South Africa (e.g., Ladysmith Black Mambazo,
Hugh Masekela, and Lucky Dube), Nigeria (e.g., Fela Kuti), Mali
(e.g., Salif Keita), and a number of other countries are heard.
Standout songs include Salif Keita's adrenaline-spiked funk tune
"Sina (Soumbouya)", Spokes Mashiyane's swinging kwele flute tune
"Chobolo", the late Fela Kuti's politically rancorous and musically
mellifluous "Coffin For The Head Of State", and Thomas Mapfumo's
scooting mbira-based "Mamvemve". Also of note is the song "The Lion
(Mbube)" from Soloman Linda's Original Evening Birds. Copyrighted by
the artist in 1938, "Lion (Mbube)" became the first African
recording to sell 100,000 copies.
Less successful tracks on the CD mix bits of traditional African
musics with a fundamental base of processed drum loops and
synthesized sounds (e.g., the new age-laden 'Okavango Slide' and
Wasis Diop's 'Everything'). All in all, "The Emperors Of Africa" is
a good bet for somebody who is interested in hearing popular African
music, as well as musics arranged by Westerners who usurp unnamed
African samples for their mixes.
