Numerous female artists, from international superstars to relatively
obscure performers, are featured side by side on The Empresses of
Africa. This 'best-of' compilation of 17 female African vocalists is
described by the CD's producers as a 'tribute to the African female
artist'. The slate of talent includes such favorites as Benin's
Angelique Kidjo, Mali's Oumou Sangare, Ethiopia's Aster Aweke, South
Africa's Busi Mhlongo, and Cape Verde's Cesaria Evora. Among these
divas' songs, Oumou Sangare's somber "Love Is So Strong (Saa Magni)"
and Cesaria Evora's live rendition of "Sodade" are particularly
noteworthy.
Other recordings that deserve mention include Rokia Traore's "Kanan
Neni" and Dorothy Masuka's "Hamba Notsokolo". The young, up and
coming Rokia Traore sings with sensitive precision, letting out
strings of notes that are akin to a hummingbird's aerial ballet. The
elder Dorothy Masuka was, along with Dolly Rathebe and Miriam
Makeba, among the most popular singers in Africa during the 1950s.
Threatened by apartheid-embracing whites in what was then Rhodesia,
Masuka recorded prodigiously in a style known as mabira before
fleeing to London. Her "Hamba Notsokolo" is a sweet and enchanting
tune that plays with mabira's characteristic swinging syncopations
and Zulu-based melodic phrasings.
By and large, the least successful songs on this CD are Disney-fied,
relying too heavily on standard pop music formulas and static drum
machine beats. These unfortunate tracks aside, The Empresses of
Africa is a solid compilation of songs by a few of Africa's many
talented divas.
