▒░░▒ ▓▓█ Description: █▓▓ ▒░░▒
▒░▒ # The growing concerns of the German metallers on # ▒░▒
▒░ ▒ being catalogued as satanic drove away their ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ obsessions with satanism and the occult (somehow ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ inspired by Stormwitch and Venom), giving rise to a ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ major turnaround in their imagery and lyrical ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ subject matter. And even though the so-called pirate ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ metal concept they created was not precisely ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ sorrounding their minds, it became the formula they ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ kept going forward. Nevertheless, due to its ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ accidental creation, the establishment of the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ concept was not completed at that point and the band ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ seemed to be uncertain as to whether this was the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ way should follow or not. ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ Despite the major turnaround in the concept, the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ music remained at some point similar to what they ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ wrote for the previous releases. The songs in this ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ album are not complex at all, but quite enjoyable ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ and heavy as hell, even though they lost some of the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ aggressivness that characterized their earliest ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ years. However, this was neither Judas Priest on ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ amphetamines nor Hoffman attempting some raw, evil ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ notes, as in "Gates to Purgatory", but rather, is ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ more like a sort of '80s inspired Judas Priest mixed ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ with some Maidenesque riffs, the melodic frenetic ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ guitar soloing techniques in the vein of Accept and ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ the rebellious spirit from Mot÷rhead (the latter ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ pretty much reflected in Kasparek's vocals and the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ pace of the songs themselves). In other words, the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ album features all the good metal stuff from the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ early '80s, as much as for instance "Thundersteel" ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ does. ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ Heralded by loud cannon shots, the galloping riffs ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ and the Priest-inspired choruses of the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ opening/title track result pretty much catchy and ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ engaging. Other remarkable mid-paced numbers include ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ the rebellious "Raise your Fist", the classic ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ "Diamonds on the Black Chest", and "Raw Ride". ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ Whereas the first two numbers are blatanty inspired ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ by Judas Priest and Accept, "Raw Ride" is ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ reminiscent of Running Wild's early sound (let's ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ say, somehow similar to "Soldiers of Hell", that is, ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ riffs everywhere and a memorable melodic guitar solo ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ right in the middle of the song). On the other hand, ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ the band included only three speed metal numbers, ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ which results limited if compared to previous ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ releases. "Beggar's Night" is a good prototype for ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ the songs the band would write for the stuff ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ released afterwards, especially the intro riff, ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ which also Helloween would use for a certain re- ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ recording of "Victims of Fate"; "Merciless Game" ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ would be another song reminiscenrt of their early ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ years (a bit similar to "Victims of State Power"); ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ and "War in the Gutter" is another song in the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ band's catalogue highly inspired by the frenetic ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ pace of "Screaming for Vengeance". ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ That said, regardless of how experimental and simple ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ Jolly Roger could result, its solid songwriting and ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ improved production work is precisely what makes ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ this album being seen as a huge leap forward for the ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ band, not to mention how good Kasparek and co. had ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ exploited at that point a concept that few bands ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ dare to get into. Moreover, the incredible ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ musicianship offered by the band remains as another ▒ ░▒
▒░ ▒ reason to consider getting this album at all costs. ▒ ░▒
