▓ Columbia records' release schedule seems to have ▓
▓ precluded waiting to find out what the Academy Award ▓
▓ winner for 1966 actually was before this album was ▓
▓ printed, hence the rather odd title. But when Percy ▓
▓ Faith went into the recording studio in February ▓
▓ 1967, the nominees had been announced, and since he ▓
▓ recorded all five of them, he could be assured that ▓
▓ the eventual victor ("Born Free," as it turned out) ▓
▓ would be included. Faith had a special reason for ▓
▓ doing an album of movie themes, since, in 1966, he ▓
▓ had one himself, "Song from 'The Oscar,'" his fifth, ▓
▓ and, as it turned out, final film score. That tune ▓
▓ didn't earn a nomination, and Faith may have been ▓
▓ commenting on the recent songs left out of the ▓
▓ running that were more memorable than those that ▓
▓ earned a nod, since he also featured some other songs ▓
▓ that had been overlooked, notably "Somewhere My Love" ▓
▓ from 1965's Dr. Zhivago and the title tune from "A ▓
▓ Man and a Woman" (though, technically, these weren't ▓
▓ really songs as much as themes, at least as they were ▓
▓ heard in the films themselves, and may not have been ▓
▓ considered eligible). "This Is My Song," meanwhile, ▓
▓ the Charlie Chaplin-composed tune from his ▓
▓ just-released final film, A Countess From Hong Kong, ▓
▓ would be ignored in the 1967 nominations. A couple of ▓
▓ the actual 1966 nominees are long-forgotten ù "The ▓
▓ Wishing Doll" (actually, "My Wishing Doll") from ▓
▓ Hawaii, for example. But "Georgy Girl" and "Alfie" ▓
▓ were hits. Faith gave the songs sympathetic, ▓
▓ string-filled arrangements that commented on the ▓
▓ popular recordings. His "Alfie," for instance, ▓
▓ featured a saxophone carrying the melody in much the ▓
▓ same way that composer Burt Bacharach ▓
▓ characteristically liked to feature single reeds in ▓
▓ his arrangements. The stronger melodies benefited, ▓
▓ though the weaker ones were not made any better. ▓
