On the heels of Berserker, GARY NUMAN's first album on his own Numa
label, and a live album called White Noise, came The Fury.
Berserker saw Numan successfully alter his direction to a more
dance-oriented funk style, but retaining the Gary Numan style. The
Fury took it a step further, still dance-oriented, but no longer
retaining much of the Numan style. There are some great songs here -
"Your Fascination" is one of his best upbeat dance tunes, while
"Miracles" and "I Still Remember" were excellent ballads - but
there's little here that says 'Gary Numan' aside from his voice.
Whereas he was previously experimenting with different percussion
instruments, all percussion is now provided by a drum machine.
Saxophone is prominent on some songs, while Tracey Ackerman and
Tessa Niles are in full-force, providing female counterpoint to
Numan's robotic tone. In a nutshell, Numan followed the basic trends
of mid-80's 'dancefunk', a major disappointment considering his
success came from going against the grain rather than with it.
This CD release adds 5 tracks, but the only important addition is a
version of "I Still Remember" with new lyrics, later released as a
single with proceeds donated to the RSPCA. After slowly working his
way back to form, Numan lost it completely here, with one of the
least-Numanish albums of his career.
