| It comprehensively documents his step of progressing from being |
| a DJ with long-time club experience booked from clubs all over |
| Europe to an independent studio producer. Monkey Island is |
| released as a Double CD: |
| |
| On CD 1 "the emphasis lies on music that I listen to when I'm not |
| playing". References to films and journeys (the melancholical |
| Napoli), even classical slow jams featuring Katherine Elvin |
| determine the image. "The cooperation with Katherine Elvin, a |
| newcomer coming from West-London, is the fulfillment of a dream |
| that I had for years." Elvin writes lyrics to the instrumentals |
| of Mahlstedt, her love songs lend more depth to his soundtracks. |
| On Monkey Island or Chu-Chu the musical direction is definined by |
| Dub and string sections related to the silver screen."the tempo |
| is reduced, leaving more space for sounds and creating |
| atmosphere." |
| |
| CD 2 unmistakably shows the club DJ Jens Mahlstedt. Schwupp and |
| Dub Snack are functional, modern club tracks of funky techno. The |
| Boost, produced by Jens Mahlstedt in cooperation with Thomas |
| speeds up in honest techno house manner, while The Chase - coming |
| from the HAMLET-soundtrack, was awarded best drum n bass track |
| 1996 in the Netherlands |
