Back in 1979, Dieter Meier and Boris Blank were introduced
to each other in a record shop in Zurich. The shop owner had a hunch
that the two musicians might enjoy jamming together. The two hit it
off immediately and made an appointment to record sounds at a
scrap-metal yard. As they listened to an old Mercedes being
demolished by the infernal shredder, they both realized they shared
   the same musical sensibility.

For the mere fun of it, they set up a small recording studio in
Zurich's "Rote Fabrik", a haven for struggling artists, and began to
experiment. Strange gorilla grunts were coupled with a Latin Cha-Cha
beat on a primitive synthesizer, and the duo Yello was born in a
soundproof, windowless room amongst a salad of cables. No one had
any idea that they would become the most successful modern-music
group to over come out of Switzerland, nor that they would still be
   together 23 years later.

A Lucky break in the US. It used to be extremely difficult for
unknown Swiss musicians to get airplay on the radio, even in their
own country. There were no alternative radio stations, and it was
thought you had to be either American or British to have any talent
at all. With a stroke of luck, Yello released their first album
"Solid Pleasure" on the legendary, independent label Ralph Records
in the US. Back in 1981, the white radio stations did not
immediately play any of the music from this album, as they didn't
know what to make of it. However, the black and Latino stations were
convinced something new was happening, and the New York Hip Hop
pioneer Afrika Bambaataa was the first DJ to extensively play
Yello's song "Bostich", helping the group achieve nationwide
"underground" popularity in the US. Sensing that Yello were a group
worth investing in, the major record company Polygram/Universal then
stepped in and still distributes their albums to this day. In 1985,
the album Stella became an international hit and the singles
"Vicious Games" and "Oh Yeah" were on everybody's lips.

With a strong, enduring track record. Yello have produced ten
successful albums since Stella, and it is not surprising that
Hollywood became interested in what the group had to offer. "Oh
Yeah" became a classic after it was played in Paramount's "Ferris
Bueller's Day Off" an Universal's "Secret of my Success" and it
continues to be used for major motion pictures and commercials
today. Also, "The Race", which was written for Germany's Formula 1
television program, and "Tied Up" have had similar success. Disney
commissioned them to write music for the film "The Santa Clause",
and all in all, Hollywood has used Yello's songs in over 30 movies.

The rock intelligentsias call Yello "The Godfathers of Techno"
because so many DJs and producers have continued to remix their
songs during the '90s rave era. In 1995, Cosmic Baby, Carl Craig,
Westbam, The Orb, Carl Cox and Moby paid their respect to the Swiss
duo with the mix project "Hands on Yello" which contained new
versions of Yello classics. However, Yello is not bound to the
confines of techno. Shirley Bassey recorded "The Rhythm Divine" with
them and still performs this song on tour.

Yello has strength in diversity. Of course, it is a great help to
any recording artist to have a major record company behind him, but
Yello's strength and longevity has come from Dieter's and Boris's
personalities, their diverse yet complementary talents and shrewd
business acumen. Dieter is the son of a banker. Besides being a
singer, he has been a film and video maker, and essayist and an
entrepreneur and is a sophisticated, dapper world traveler. Before
the two met, Boris Blank was working around town to support his
music. A shy though witty man, he prefers to spend eight hours a day
in his studio and to travel as little as possible.

Visually inspired. Boris will spend months in the studio inventing
sounds and then composing and recording music for an album. Dieter
will listen to these tracks carefully, then write and sing lyrics
over them to shape the work into songs. "For me, when I hear Boris's
pieces I'm immediately inspired visually," says Dieter. "It's like
when you're writing, and as soon as you put on his music, the hero
comes through the door." Perhaps this is why Dieter's videos for
Yello's songs are such a success. He has won several awards for his
innovative use of backscreen projection and helped and inspired
countless other directors to define the form. In 1997, Zurich
honored these two artists with the city's prestigious Kunstpreis.

Enjoy this really nice CDM from those crazy guys...

MORAL DiSCLAiMER: We are very aware of the fact that our releases
contribute to the growing sale losses of record companies.
Unfortunately our style primarily targets small, independant labels
     that need sales to survive.

For these reasons we ask you not to distribute this release on public
sites or P2P tools; if more and more receive their music from the net,
artists and labels will have to face even less sells than nowadays.
Please do not consider this release as a substitute to the original, but
only as a way to check out and learn about new music.
We absolutely do not approve of DJs or other individuals that earn
money from pirated music - Don't let them get their hands on it!

By buying the albums you like you disperse the guilt we feel by
releasing this music - Enjoy the music and be fair with the artists!
YOUR support is required to keep them financially alive and producing!
