from the 'bruq steppin' series comes a solid double a side 12"
from the faada label. three of dance music's most unique artistic
entities deliver over the boundary blurring production of
spoonface.
"move up" is a collaboration featuring the conscious spirit
lifting vocals of colonel red. the multi-talented
producer/vocalist, writer/performer of accomplished 'broken soul'
album "blue eyed black" (people). here the colonel lays down his
marvin gaye-esk velvet vocal flow over crunchy broken
beat/dancehall style spoonface kicks & snares.
faada are yet to reveal the alison evelyn, light particle and
revival legend 'janet kay' contributions over the 'bruq luv
riddim' and thus in the mean time tease further with "yang style".
this is the spoonface remix of the seiji & spoonface link up "yin
yang" (honest jons).
spoonface teams up with soul icon, omar to record the cheeky
broken beat club commentary "she don't know my name" over the 'ill
bruq riddim'. some will recognise this bouncy bruq step
instrumental from the spoonface remix of 'deekline & wizards' 'il
street blues' featuring yolanda quartey.
for over a decade omar has been cited as a major influence by the
likes of d'angelo, maxwell, jill scott, erykah badu and even
stevie wonder (to name just a few) with spoonface in the midst of
the ever-growing list. having already worked together on janet
kay's "lovin you more" album (on the track titled 'imagine' (sony
music japan). it was only a matter of time before they would work
together again this time with omar providing the vocal offerings.
this fresh concoction is very different, not as musical a journey
as "it's so" (omar music) but more tongue in cheek, reggae revival
soul meets broken beat dance floor 'hed-nod-ary'.
already receiving spins from broken beat guru i.g. culture, simon
harrison, gareth stevens (cellar sessions), jay da flex
(underground knowledge, 1xtra), bruce q (liquid fusion) and with
thumbs up from cdr monarchs uncle g and tony nwachukwu. this is
definitely one that deserves a warm space at the front of the
record box (errrm i-pod).
