       Medieval Folk from Minsk, Belarus

English translation of lyrics in nfo, original lyrics
       in ID3 tags

We are a Medieval music band from Minsk, Belarus. WHAT
WE DO: - Recreate the musical traditions of the Grand
       Duchy of Lithuania, 13th - 18th c. - Perform
traditional folklore of the cities and knights of the
Belarusian and European Middle Ages, and chamber music
of Renaissance castles. - Our musical instruments have
been reproduced with authentic materials and
       techniques.

Feast is the art! Noble relations, sincere friends,
lifted spirits, singing and dancing together,
challenges and adventures, picturesque landscapes and
fire, delicious food prepared over an open fire, and
the ancient drink! Our ancestors were very capable
feast makers, had good taste and appreciated fine food.
Water, hops, and malt are the three essential
components of the old, true, beloved drink ù beer ù
which unites all classes, all nations and ages. In this
album we tried to restore the spirit of ancient feasts:
humorous, religious, military songs and ballads, and,
of course, songs about feast drinking.

The album takes its name from a drinking song of XV? c.
"Water, Hops and Malt" (from the song cycle in honor of
beer). The 14th album of the Stary Olsa band will move
you to an old tavern, where you can feel life of
       medieval cities and castles!

       Illia Kublicki (cisters)
Alies Cumakou (vocals, gusli, rebec, shawms, hurdy-gurdy)

       back vocal)

       Recording: Sunflowers Studio, Vital Kulieuski

       Cover design: Dzianis Likhalap
       Translation of lyrics into Belarusian (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
11, 13), text and melody adaptation: Zmicier Sasnouski
Actual English translation of lyrics: Alena Martsyanava,

       1. Pachod na Frankfurt (March to Frankfurt)
Drinking song, Maciej Stryjkowski, 16 c.

       In Harodnya, the castle
       Rises over the Nieman river.
       David the Duke arms up
       And gathers his riders.
       Through foreign lands
       They rushed to Frankfurt,
And the Germans were defeated quickly
       By David's men.

       The Duke's army
       Is happy with the captives!
       Five thousand German women
       Were promptly shared.
But two Litvins at some moment
       Started an argument:
       Which one of them
       Will get the prettiest girl?

       They couldn't settle
       Their dispute peacefully,
So one of them pulled the sword out
And cut the girl in half.
Then he said: "Brother, we'd rather
       Not touch that German woman!
Now each one of us can have
A part of her, pick any."

       2. Pachvala kniaziu Vitautu (Ode to Duke Vitaut)
An excerpt from the poem Song of the Wisent, Mikalaj
       Husouski, 1523

Vitaut, the ruler of the Great Litva,
Managed to sustain the warriors' temper.
During Vitaut's ruling, the country's greatness grew,
Building armed dwellings in Litva was his intention.

       In between the wars, the power of the country grew;
Troops were growing strong at bison hunting.
New recruits were taken to the woods
To gain strength from being among the beasts, fighting
       them.

The strong ones lived in fights and sorrows,
The mighty spirit of knights never faded.
Vitaut, as the true king of Litva, was pleased with his
       army,
He would protect the borders with his sword to scare
       off the enemies.

       3. Vada, chmiel' i solad (Water, Hops and Malt)
       Drinking song, 15 ?.

       Towns drink beer; villages, too.
       Wealthy masters drink it,
       Simple people do.
       Thin people drink beer,
       Huge people, too,
       Elderly folks drink it,
       And lads with no beard.

       Refrain:
       From mugs to our tummy
       Beer merrily pours,
       The ancient drink made of
       Hops, water, and malt.

       All countries drink beer,
       All nations do, too,
       An earl by the fire,
And a crook with no roots.
       Ladies drink beer,
       And gentlemen do,
For a price of an old thaler
       Or a new zloty, too.

       Refrain.

       The bishop drinks beer,
       The atheist also,
       Professors while reading,
       Or students on route,
       The countrymen drink it,
       The knighthood drinks beer,
       The gypsies in their tribes,
       And Tatars at the lines.

       Refrain.

       4. Zasnavannie Vil'ni (Founding of Vil'nia)
       Ballade, Maciej Stryjkowski, 16 c.

On the mountain where the castle towers,
There used to burn an eternal flame.
       The great Duke Hedymin
Was hunting down the enormous bison
       With his troops.

The Duke was happy with his capture.
The defeated bison lay by the picturesque river.
       Feast, celebration, smell of food,
       Beer and mead after,
The Duke fell asleep on the fur as per custom.

The Duke fell into deep sleep,
A Steel wolf appeared as if by magic.
       The beast howled fiercely,
       Like an entire pack howls in the woods;
The wolf's armor shimmered with light.

The Duke called the oracles at daybreak.
They explained the secret of the strange dream:
"You'll build your city, The Duchy,
You will gain honor and peace.
The Wolves' howling is the glory among nations."

The Duke listened to the words of prophesy,
The prophesy of the steel wolf.
Then he founded a great city.
He named it Vil'nia for centuries to come
And made it the capital of the Great Litva.

       5. Kola rycerska (Great is the Knighthood)
       Drinking song, 15 c.

For those whom God gave warriors' souls,
       Great is the knighthood!
       The great horsemen and swordsmen,
Are a king's pride and glory.
       The first ones to attack,
       Who crave every fight.
       Have the warriors' souls,
       Great is the knighthood!

For those whom God gave blockheads,
       Great is the knighthood!
Those who long to crash with their heads, to challenge
       Turkish peaks and spears,
       Those who say no word,
       But smash the plank table,
       They have the blockheads,
       Great is the knighthood!

For those to whom God gave drinker's throat,
       Great is the knighthood!
       To swallow best
       The Beer from old Vilno!
Those for whom madness hasn't left,
       Have drinker's throat,
They drink from cups and buckets,
       Great is the knighthood!

       6. Siem radasciau (Seven Joys)
Religious song: Los set gotxs (Llibre vermell de
       Montserrat), 14 c.

       Seven great joys,
       We sing merrily.
Chant for the Lady has begun,
       So we praise Holy Mary.

       Refrain:
       Oh, Holy Mary,
The Lord is always on your side.

       Son of God was born,
       The Mother was pure,
Three kings came from the East,
       Stars were guiding them.

       Refrain.

The pain has swept the Mother -
       Her beloved son was killed.
       She was the first one,
Whom risen Jesus Christ came to see.

       Refrain.

       7. U advarotny sliach (Return Journey)
Virelai:Quant je sui mis au retour, Guillaume de
       Machaut, 14 c.

       For the journey back
       I was madly longing again;
       To my beloved one,
I was coming back from far away.

       Refrain:
Oh, God, I'm burning (on fire)
       Madly dying for her.
The World is thriving on those feelings.

Oh, how my soul was fighting
       And screaming in agony,
Her beloved image was my inspiration -
       All sorrows disappeared.

       Refrain.

I think of her again and again.
       Every day and every night
       Fire is surrounding me.
The heart is searching for a way out.

       Refrain.

       8. Himn studentau (Students' Anthem)
Students' Anthem: Gaudeamus igitur, 13-14 c.

       Let's rejoice
       While we're young.
       Let's rejoice,
       While we're still not old.
When the crazy youth is gone,
       After troubled old age,
       The soil will embrace us.

       Long live Academia!
       Long live professors!
       Long live Academia!
       Long live professors!
       Let the teachers always,
       Either together or apart,
       Be in a good mood.

       Let all young women
       Glow with love,
       And shimmer brightly
       With pride.
       Let Dames and ladies
       Shine like golden coins,
       With grace and tenderness.

       May joy and happiness
       Dwell in our hearts,
       And grief and sorrows
       Vanish forever.
       Perish, Devil. Hell will vanish.
       Enemies, who mock us,
       All will disappear.

       Alma Mater gave us all
       An exceptional education,
       And united all of us
       Into friendly family.
       From the towns and capitals,
       Villages and places,
       You've gathered us all.

       Let our brotherhood
       Have no ending.
       Let the students' fellowship
       Flourish greatly.
       We must seek the truth
       For the sake of science.
       We praise the Motherland!

       9. Marazula
Song-dance from the medieval mystery about Death, 15 c.

I am the Lady of all the living,
       Over the great and small,
       Over the old and young,
       I bear the power.
       No one, nowhere, ever
       Will escape
       An encounter with me
And the touch of my scythe.

Light the night up with torches,
       Free your souls.
Spin in a wild circle dance
       With the old Lady.
       Sooner or later,
       In health or in sickness,
The last night under the stars
       You will spend with me.

       Dance away my sinners,
       The grief will disappear!
       Drown your sorrow in wine,
       Let go of your peace!
Dance as if it was your last dance,
For the fire of the soul would last!
Those who stop die at once,
       Reaped by the scythe!

       10. A dzie z tyja vajary (Where are Those Warriors)
March by the Kamelot band (folk music, lyrics: Zmicier
       Sidarovic) based on historical events

Where are those warriors who went with me to the Crimea?
Hey, hey, hey, oh-ha-ha, who went with me to the Crimea.

Where are those swords that could cut the enemy's
       shoulders?
Hey, hey, hey, oh-ha-ha, that cut the enemy's shoulders.

There's no peace for our souls -
       The hostile army comes again.
Hey, hey, hey, oh-ha-ha, the hostile army comes again.

Archers ready, bows are bent, we will fight the enemy.
Hey, hey, hey, oh-ha-ha, we will fight the enemy.

The horses stamp impatiently, ready to carry the
       warriors.
Hey, hey, hey, oh-ha-ha, ready to carry the warriors.

There will be a great battle; Litva will be free again.
Hey, hey, hey, oh-ha-ha, Litva will be free again.

And when the fight is over, we will drink and have a
       good time.
Hey, hey, hey, oh-ha-ha, we will drink and have a good
       time.

       11. U karcmie (In the Tavern)
Drinking song: In Taberna, 15 ?.

When we were in the tavern,
       We were careless,
       Only fun in our heads.
       Drink beer, praise fun!
       Those who visit taverns,
       Gain some fat for sure.
Those who listen to these words
       Will be strong and fit.

       Those who drink with us,
Will never have a boring life.
       Fun makes grief go away
As the hostess pours more wine.
       Grief will choke on beer
As we will raise our mugs with joy,
We will be drinking, making jokes.
       Praise Bacchus, brothers!

The first glass is often raised
To those who gathered here today.
We drink the second one to freedom,
And our third glass is to Life.
The fourth one is to the Church of Christ,
The fifth one is to the mighty Duke,
The sixth one is to all free people,
And the last one is for those who are still standing.

       12. Dva kruki (Two Ravens)
       Students' ridicule song, 16 ?.

On the tree there were two ravens
       Croaking just a little
       About their happy life
       With no mess or evil.

The knight is sleeping under the tree.
       His head is crushed badly.
His coat of arms is covered with
       Growing grass, so sadly.

       And the first raven asked,
       "What is pride, my dear?"
And the other said, "Look down
       At this lifeless body."
       And first raven asked again,
       "What is greed, my dear?"
And the other said, "Look down.
There's lots of gold and weapons."

       And the first raven asked,
"Do you know what hunger means?"
And the other said, "There is no hunger,
       As many knights are there."

       Humans always long for wealth,
       Gold, and gems, and treasure;
       Thus, we're never gonna have,
       Hunger, at our pleasure.

       13. Kurdesz*
Drinking song, Franciszek Bohomolec, 18 c.

       Order wine, dear Lord Grzegorz,
So we can have a peaceful sleep.
       Let Hanulka join us,
       Kurdesz, kurdesz above all kurdeszes!

With the touch of the bottle
Grief leaves our hearts at once.
All we want is to raise our glasses together,
       Kurdesz, kurdesz above all kurdeszes!

       That wine has excellent aftermath;
It fills my heart with great joy.
Get rid of small glasses, drink straight from the
       pitchers!
       Kurdesz, kurdesz above all kurdeszes!

       Let's revive the drinking customs,
Throw the glasses and broken dishes away.
Drink from mugs, like in old times!
       Kurdesz, kurdesz above all kurdeszes!

*kurdesz (koordesh) - old polish, close friend

       14. Kielich kola (Drinking Mug)
       Drinking canticle, 16-17 c.

Hey-Hey, let's sit in a circle and merrily
       Drink and talk,
       And forget about everything,
It will all be all right!

Hey-Hey, don't put your mug down!
If you want to drink some more, just ask,
       Malty beer comes foremost,
       Everything else can wait.

       Hey-Hey, the ghastly war
       Is over for now,
       Let's celebrate and
       Drink plenty of beer -
       Beer is life.

Hey-Hey, let the troubles leave our neighbours.
       Drink now; worries will disappear.
       Pour more beer,
       Celebrate this happy moment.

Hey-Hey, let's sit in a circle and merrily
       Drink and talk,
       And forget about everything,
It will all be all right!
