as guidance approaches its half century mark, it shifts gears
again. this time the label explores the streets of hip hop. "urban
renewal: word on the street" is a stunning exerpt from the
forthcoming full length spoken word album "the voices of urban
renewal". hip hop's fastest rising star, mos def, sets it off with
a colloquial paean to the higher power in "all praise due". after
many featured performances with de la soul, dj krush, mike zoot,
mos def who is half of black star with talib kweli, is on the
verge of dropping his solo debut on mca. the smooth, polished
beats, courtesy of a.d.l.i.b. a/k/a mansa (producer of kombo
"don't stop"), provide the essential backing track for this street
serenade. the flip introduces prime meridian, leading contenders
for chicago's underground hip hop title. "musical mirages" is a
masterpiece of abstract verses woven into a tight, colorful beat.
simeon and the scarecrow conjure a wide panorama of images over a
hypnotizing beat. the bonus cut, "bang!" was produced by maseo of
