The mind and the man behind Rome is JΘr⌠me Reuter, but over the years other
members have found their way in, as in Nikos Mavridis, and more recently Patrick
Damiani on violin. According to the band they play ôChanson Noirö, based around
traditional French folk songs, drawn towards the darker side of our minds. Since
the start in 2005 Rome has been a productive act, releasing one full-length
record each year, except in 2011 when they released no less than three. From
2006 to 2009 they were signed to Cold Meat Industry, but nowadays they are under
the wings of Trisol. JΘr⌠me is the core and the voice of Rome (LU), ôNos Chants
Perdusö (Eng. ôOur Lost Songsö), a piece of brilliant acoustic neofolk. The
steady stream of songs are carried along by strings, spanish guitar, some
accordion, besides the torn, warm voice that is JΘr⌠meÆs.
Within ôNos Chants Perdusö the lettered listener can find traces of world
literature from Albert Camus, Marcel Proust, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Jean Genet.
While all titles are in French, almost all of the poetic lyrics are in English.
The songs are delivered in a slow, dreamy manner, yet keeping the mind wide
awake û full of instrumental details that should fill even a connoisseurÆs ears
with delight. Some moments definitely brings along a scent of France, but the
themes are very much universal. The smell is that of smoky cafΘs, red wine and
the heavy stench of humanityÆs decadence pouring from those romantically lit
alleys. Revolution lingers in the air and the summer night shadows have grown
dark and foreboding.
It is a world where sadness, fear and anger waits close beneath the beautiful
surface, as in ôLes Deracinesö (Eng. öThe Rootlessö): ôAnd if only for me,
please, hold your fire, and hide your fires at night, and if only for me,
please, sink your crowns now, and drown your bells inside of me.ö But there is
also the hope of change, that we can revolt and create our own path, even if the
stakes are high, as heard in ôLa Communeö: ôWrap your arms around my back, wrap
me up in your black flags, for black is the color and freedom is the word.ö It
goes as far as a silent summoning in ôLes Iles Noiresö (Eng. öThe Black Islesö):
ôFor we were not born to live their lie, in houses built to keep the tv dry, so
to make you see, to make us heard, weÆll have to rebuild our islands word by
word.ö But there are other themes within this album as well; a trembling feeling
of loss, clearly visible in ôLÆAssassinö, some almost erotical parts passes by,
as on ôLa Rose Et La Hacheö (Eng. ôThe Rose and the Axeö). No matter the meaning
there is strong passion behind every word, drawing me closer still, as in the
ending of ôSous La Dagueö (Eng. öUnder the Daggerö).
ôNos Chants Perdusö is a silent manifesto, if so chosen to be, or a gathering of
beautiful melancholic songs, for those choosing the easy way out. Musically it
should appeal to many ears, from listeners of classic Nick Cave to more obscure
acts such as Spiritual Front. It is smooth, yet leaving a taste of blood on the
tongue as the meaning of those lines grows clearer each time heard. Above this
the album is genuine and touching, with melodies that haunts the back of the
head when left in silence. This is songs for silent struggle, forgotten rebels
and hearts longing for another world. As one of them, I can do little else than
adore it.
