███▓ This is what heathenharvest.org writes about this release: ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Holologium is a project that confused me from the very beginning ▓███
███▓ with this latest album on Poland's Rage in Eden. The placement of ▓███
███▓ the name and title, Labyrinthos, on both the cover and side of the ▓███
███▓ album created bewilderment over which was the album title and which ▓███
███▓ was the band name. I was initially very excited as labyrinths are ▓███
███▓ one of my favorite topics, and any piece of art that depicts the ▓███
███▓ subject is something that I am interested in. As I discovered the ▓███
███▓ history of the project, researched older material, and found that ▓███
███▓ peers of mine found them enjoyable, I became even more confused. ▓███
███▓ Initially wanting to dismiss the album altogether, certain tracks ▓███
███▓ demanded my attention as I tried to make it all the way in and out ▓███
███▓ of this twisting spiral. This forced journey led to an album that ▓███
███▓ frustratingly could be more than the sum of its parts yet remains ▓███
███▓ as a cohesive whole an album that I will gladly place to the side ▓███
███▓ and try my best to completely forget when this is said and done. I ▓███
███▓ guess as the title suggests, there is only one way out, and that ▓███
███▓ way forces me to explain what it is that makes Labyrinthos such a ▓███
███▓ frustrating and confusing album. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Things begin with droning noises, martial drums, and an odd style ▓███
███▓ of chanting that should be interesting but ultimately leaves no ▓███
███▓ impression whatsoever. Certainly, this chanting doesnÆt lead to ▓███
███▓ anything directly negative, but it simply sounds like filler. As ▓███
███▓ the babbling ends and the second track begins, a beat begins that ▓███
███▓ for the first twenty seconds could be labeled as enjoyable. As the ▓███
███▓ same beat continues, various noises come in and out, showing a very ▓███
███▓ mundane consistency as the original rhythm never changes in any ▓███
███▓ form, and a complete inconsistency on when and what noises are ▓███
███▓ heard. The sounds are like a channel on a radio being quickly ▓███
███▓ passed, or perhaps a sound clip, or some kind of marching chantùall ▓███
███▓ very random. The opening moments managed to hold my intrigue, but ▓███
███▓ the album simply never changes. Worse, it is this same exact ▓███
███▓ formula that dominates the majority of the album. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ A few tracks in, ôLes Flammes de la Colonteö changes things up ▓███
███▓ quite a bit, with sections that are traditional in the dark ambient ▓███
███▓ vein and create a frightening landscape. If I had heard this song ▓███
███▓ first, I would have been quite interested to hear more. ▓███
███▓ Unfortunately, this is a stand-out track, and one of the few ▓███
███▓ redeeming qualities of Labyrinthos, even though for a piece of this ▓███
███▓ style it is definitely above the standard with its eerie passages ▓███
███▓ and crashing noises. It actually sounds like a group of slaves ▓███
███▓ chained together in HellÆs inferno, pushing a giant wheel around ▓███
███▓ under an eternity of demonic chants. Unfortunately, the next ▓███
███▓ ôIntermezzoö is built upon a whacky madness with sounds of broken ▓███
███▓ springs and clocks and coo-coo noises that are simply irritating. ▓███
███▓ If the point of the track was to irritate the listener, job well ▓███
███▓ done. The following piece evokes Tom Waitsæs weirdest elements with ▓███
███▓ a vocal sample that is so out-of-place that I canÆt help but ▓███
███▓ chuckle: It sounds like an old railroad workers chant, and if it ▓███
███▓ wasnÆt for an oddly placed, high-pitched squeal it could be all ▓███
███▓ right. This was another potentially decent song that was ruined, ▓███
███▓ and it makes me think that Labyrinthos is ultimately a practical ▓███
███▓ joke that Horologium is trying to pull over on its audience. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ While the middle of the album has something of interest, it does ▓███
███▓ not continue this trajectory. Instead, things return again to where ▓███
███▓ they started: the same formula of a repeating track with random ▓███
███▓ samples and noise clips. Minus the aforementioned songs, this whole ▓███
███▓ album could be summed up in ten minutes and you would not miss a ▓███
███▓ thing. In short, this sounds more like a collection of samples for ▓███
███▓ other groups to use; most of Labyrinthos does not sound like a ▓███
███▓ fully composed song or even something interesting and abstract. ▓███
███▓ Perhaps I am missing something, but having gone back through older ▓███
███▓ material, I hear quite a bit of appealing qualities, and admittedly ▓███
███▓ some things that are nothing short of pretentious, although ▓███
███▓ creative in their aspirations to pretend of their faux elitism. ▓███
███▓ However, rarely do any of those moments exist on Labyrinthos. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ To answer sole member Grzegorz Siedleckiæs own question which is ▓███
███▓ seen underneath the album tray: No, you unfortunately have not ▓███
███▓ been understood. ▓███
