██▓▓ synthy records sounded fresh and retro at the ██▓▓
██▓▓ same time when they were released in 2004, ██▓▓
██▓▓ and they havenÆt lost their impact ██▓▓
██▓▓ years on. From acid to melancholy dub, the ██▓▓
██▓▓ analogue aesthetic of the series has become ██▓▓
██▓▓ the recognisable signature of CostelloÆs ██▓▓
██▓▓ Minimise. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ Does this compilation CD really add anything ██▓▓
██▓▓ to the Colorseries? Or is it strictly for ██▓▓
██▓▓ completists? Remastered for the compilation, ██▓▓
██▓▓ the tracks sound smoother, and there is ██▓▓
██▓▓ unreleased material, æSessionsÆ from both ██▓▓
██▓▓ Opal and Cocoa. æOpal SessionsÆ is a deeper ██▓▓
██▓▓ version of æOpal AÆ, with the arpeggios ██▓▓
██▓▓ inverted to the downward progression of notes ██▓▓
██▓▓ so characteristic of the series, while æCocoa ██▓▓
██▓▓ SessionsÆ a subtle reworking of æCocoa BÆ. ██▓▓
██▓▓ ██▓▓
██▓▓ Obviously, some tracks have been trimmed to ██▓▓
██▓▓ fit, and more than half are missing ██▓▓
██▓▓ altogether. As an overview of the series for ██▓▓
██▓▓ those who missed out the first time around, ██▓▓
██▓▓ it's okay, but itÆs no replacement for the ██▓▓
██▓▓ full set; it has the range, but not the ██▓▓
██▓▓ breadth and depth. Instead, the CD gives you ██▓▓
██▓▓ a peek at Costello playing favourites. A ██▓▓
██▓▓ concept compilation of a concept series. ██▓▓
██▓▓ Opening with the bleepy æOrangeÆ, the CD ██▓▓
██▓▓ builds by increments into to the heady acidy ██▓▓
██▓▓ peaks of æOpal SessionsÆ before opening onto ██▓▓
██▓▓ the deeper, spacier æBlueÆ, through the ██▓▓
██▓▓ melancholy troughs of æCocoaÆ, before ending ██▓▓
██▓▓ with the ease of æMustardÆÆs pop. ItÆs an ██▓▓
██▓▓ assemblage. Those interested in a mix might ██▓▓
██▓▓ want to check Ryan ElliottÆs fine ██▓▓
██▓▓ dissections, if they havenÆt already. ██▓▓
