"As long as you love me, I know I'll never die." During 2005's brief Magic
Bullet Records Spring Tour (featuring On Fire, Meneguar, Paul Michel, Stephen
Brodsky, and New Idea Society), no phrase had more of an impact or followed
attendees around more than the final notes/words of the final song in Paul
Michel's set ("You, My Only One"). Night after night, audiences just stood
aghast as Paul plucked and crooned his way into their hearts and minds with his
heartfelt and finely crafted brand of modern love songs. Many wept openly over
the impact of such phrasing, all delivered by skinny bearded guy and his
acoustic guitar. With "These Are All Beautiful Things," his debut full length,
Michel picks up where he left off with 2004's "Ayuda!" CDEP and truly puts forth
one of "those" records that seemingly comes out of nowhere and has instant
impact upon listeners. Songs like the aforementioned "You, My Only One," and the
head-bobbing "Oh What A Day" are the kind of tracks that beg to be backed up and
listened to again and again until you realize that you're now running 30 minutes
late for a hot date. In the era of boys wearing mascara & girl pants and
implying that they're "not okay" en masse in hopes of selling records to 14-year
olds, sometimes it takes a once-in-a-lifetime pure singer/songwriter like Paul
Michel to quietly sneak in the back door and hit "reset." When the gimmicks,
fads, and crass marketing tactics fade, all we have left is the music itself to
judge. This is where Paul Michel devotes every waking minute of his life and
this is neither an artist or an album that we'll be making fun of on a VH1 show
4 years from now. "These Are All Beautiful Things" is truth in advertising if
ever there was such a thing: 10 songs of flawless pop/folk brilliance that will
spend far more time in your head than you could ever anticipate.
