Ronnie Artur is the coffeehouse alter ego of local
rockabilly legend Ronnie Hayward. Billed as a ônew bohemian
jazz shmozzleö and employing a firecracker band that
includes steel guitar, trombone, sax, and bongos, Get This!
avoids mere pastiche, thanks to HaywardÆs Billy Pilgrimûlike
qualities. The hero of Kurt VonnegutÆs Slaughterhouse Five
is ôspastic in timeö and so is Hayward: he apparently
doesnÆt age, his hair and On the Waterfront duds never
change, and blue smoke tends to cling to him. ItÆs as if he
emerged from the background of a Weegee photograph. He
embodies the taciturn yet emotionally volatile man of the
early 20th century: confused, poor, and hurt.
