│║ Running Wild is a band IÆve always been attached ║ │
│║ to in some way. In my teenage years, I was ║ │
│║ always listening to at least one Running Wild ║ │
│║ album in rotation with other bands I was into at ║ │
│║ the time. Learning about their history and large ║ │
│║ discography was always a passion of mine and ║ │
│║ IÆve long considered them one of my favorite ║ │
│║ bands. LetÆs see if we can uncover some hidden ║ │
│║ treasures, or is this another band with a ║ │
│║ mediocre first album they sweep under the rug? ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The album begins with a catchy raw riff full ║ │
│║ force, letting you know exactly what youÆre in ║ │
│║ for musically. Speed, power, and crunch. The ║ │
│║ song writing here is solid, even of Rolf canÆt ║ │
│║ pronounce most of the words properly. But eh, ║ │
│║ comes with the territory. Victim States Power, ║ │
│║ Adrian, and Soldiers of Hell bring the speed ║ │
│║ portion of this album and are as great as youÆd ║ │
│║ expect coming from the German legends, but ║ │
│║ honestly the slower and more mid-tempo songs ║ │
│║ bring their own flavor to the record. ôPreacherö ║ │
│║ is a track that slows things down tremendously ║ │
│║ but not in a negative way. The middle of itÆs my ║ │
│║ personal favorite, when you can hear the bass ║ │
│║ thumping along with those drums just before the ║ │
│║ solo comes roaring in. Black DemonÆs chorus is ║ │
│║ one of the catchiest on the record and IÆm ║ │
│║ always humming it after a listen. Lyrically the ║ │
│║ album is heavy with occultism, religion, and the ║ │
│║ usual heavy metal fare. Adrian (S.O.S) is the ║ │
│║ crowning achievement. It hits all the speed ║ │
│║ metal points perfectly and has one catchy riff ║ │
│║ that IÆm a huge fan of. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ If youÆve heard anything from this band, RolfÆs ║ │
│║ voice is usually the first thing people pay ║ │
│║ attention to. His raspy and powerful grunting is ║ │
│║ synonymous with the groupÆs overall sound. Here, ║ │
│║ itÆs much different than the later years. Much ║ │
│║ deeper and hoarser the usual. It fits the album ║ │
│║ well with the rawer production. The lead guitar ║ │
│║ player under the name Preacher (funny enough) ║ │
│║ has some great solo moments here, memorable ║ │
│║ riffs and is credited with writing some of the ║ │
│║ best songs on the record. Stephan Boriss and ║ │
│║ Wolfgang Hagemann both are great on Bass and ║ │
│║ Drums respectively. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Usually when strumming through Running WildÆs ║ │
│║ discography I notice most people forget about ║ │
│║ this and its successor ôBranded and Exiledö, ║ │
│║ myself included, not really having any clue why. ║ │
│║ Maybe because the pirate theme the band is known ║ │
│║ for doesnÆt kick in until ôUnder Jolly Rogerö? ║ │
│║ IÆm not too sure, but whenever I give ôGates of ║ │
│║ Purgatoryö a listen I always want to slap myself ║ │
│║ thinking why I rarely give this a spin? DonÆt be ║ │
│║ me, get this record. If youÆre a fan of old ║ │
│║ school heavy metal, you canÆt go wrong here. ║ │
│║ Some may find the album amateurish and RolfÆs ║ │
│║ pronunciation a little difficult to get through, ║ │
│║ but honestly, I donÆt see either of those things ║ │
│║ being deal breakers. ôGates of Purgatoryö is a ║ │
│║ fine album from the mid-eighties that always ║ │
│║ deserves more recognition then it gets. The 2017 ║ │
│║ remaster of this comes with some nice extra ║ │
│║ goodies as well from older compilations, demos, ║ │
│║ and re-recordings from Æ91. Well worth a pick ║ │
│║ up. ║ │
