│║        Whenever Arjen releases an album, it is a               ║ │
│║        guaranteed masterpiece. Excluding the very first        ║ │
│║        Ayreon album and his Ambeon project, all of his         ║ │
│║        releases are some of the best in their                  ║ │
│║        respective genre. Ayreon is his most known and          ║ │
│║        complete project, having influences from a lot          ║ │
│║        of genres, including folk, electronic, and, of          ║ │
│║        course, metal. As well as always having stellar         ║ │
│║        musicians and singers since 1998's Into the             ║ │
│║        Electric Castle (the first two Ayreon albums            ║ │
│║        have a talented personnel indeed, but not very          ║ │
│║        well-known).                                            ║ │
│║                                                                ║ │
│║        As with most Ayreon albums, The Source is a rock        ║ │
│║        opera, with each singer playing a different             ║ │
│║        character. Where it differs from the previous           ║ │
│║        album, The Theory of Everything, is in that this        ║ │
│║        marks a return to the Forever Saga, arguably the        ║ │
│║        most ambitious story told through music. As we          ║ │
│║        all know, the story ended in 2009, with                 ║ │
│║        Epilogue: The Memory Remains, so the only               ║ │
│║        possible way to continue it is in the much-             ║ │
│║        feared form of prequel. But fear not, for this          ║ │
│║        prequel is very good indeed, even if the story          ║ │
│║        is not as good as previous albums. On to the            ║ │
│║        music.                                                  ║ │
│║                                                                ║ │
│║        The Source kicks off with The Day that the World        ║ │
│║        Breaks Down, the longest song on the album. It          ║ │
│║        starts with a soft verse, sang by James LaBrie,         ║ │
│║        then it turns into a heavy track, with the              ║ │
│║        trademark Ayreon sound. Slowly the full cast of         ║ │
│║        singers starts to unfold. Tommy Karevik returns,        ║ │
│║        Simone Simons now gets more time than what she          ║ │
│║        got in 01011001, the incredibly talented Mike           ║ │
│║        Mills from Toehider sings for Arjen once again,         ║ │
│║        and what a return he has. Hansi Kⁿrsch and Floor        ║ │
│║        Jansen return as well, these last two playing           ║ │
│║        the same characters they did on 01011001, and           ║ │
│║        many more. The song itself then evolves into a          ║ │
│║        weird a capella part just to finish off with a          ║ │
│║        bluesy riff.                                            ║ │
│║                                                                ║ │
│║        Everybody Dies is a surprising uplifting, and,          ║ │
│║        dare I say, very α la Townsend, song for such a         ║ │
│║        grim title. The vocals, especially Tommy Rogers'        ║ │
│║        and Mike Mills' are incredible once again. All          ║ │
│║        that Was is a nice folky song that could have           ║ │
│║        been on The Gentle Storm had it a little more           ║ │
│║        bombast. Run! Apocalypse! Run! is a great               ║ │
│║        energy-filled track with amazing choruses that          ║ │
│║        remind me a lot of Queen, courtesy of the               ║ │
│║        incredibly talented Mike Mills (again? he's             ║ │
│║        everywhere!).                                           ║ │
│║                                                                ║ │
│║        Moving on to the second disc, Deathcry of a Race        ║ │
│║        has a nice flute riff like the ones we've come          ║ │
│║        to love from previous albums, and an interesting        ║ │
│║        bridge that uses Simone's and Floor's operatic          ║ │
│║        vocals to their full extent and some . Planet Y         ║ │
│║        Is Alive! has perhaps the most addictive chorus         ║ │
│║        in the album and one of Guthrie Govan's best            ║ │
│║        solos yet. The final three songs, Journey to            ║ │
│║        Forever, The Human Compulsion and March of the          ║ │
│║        Machines tie in together in a splendorous way,          ║ │
│║        even nodding towards the final track on the             ║ │
│║        album The Human Equation and leaving the stage          ║ │
│║        set for 01011001.                                       ║ │
│║                                                                ║ │
│║        The only downsides I find in this album are the         ║ │
│║        story and the lyrics. They're not bad, mind you,        ║ │
│║        but the story is the weakest (in my opinion, of         ║ │
│║        course) in the whole Ayreon project. And the            ║ │
│║        lyrics are just overly simplistic (more than            ║ │
│║        usual) and don't add another dimension to the           ║ │
│║        music like, say Epilogue: The Memory Remains or         ║ │
│║        the last couple Imperious albums (different             ║ │
│║        genres, I know, but those lyrics are masterful          ║ │
│║        and add a lot to the music). But if I really            ║ │
│║        cared about lyrics, I guess I wouldn't listen to        ║ │
│║        Steven Wilson and his endless whining about             ║ │
│║        technology.                                             ║ │
│║                                                                ║ │
│║        Overall, this is a very strong musical outing           ║ │
│║        from our favorite Dutchman that ranks among his         ║ │
│║        best works, and I would compare it to The Theory        ║ │
│║        of Everything and The Human Equation (Arjen's           ║ │
│║        two best albums according to my ears) even if           ║ │
│║        the songwriting is simpler than four 20-minute          ║ │
│║        tracks or and emotional journey through the             ║ │
│║        human psyque. The vocalist shine, every last one        ║ │
│║        of them, everyone bringing their style to make          ║ │
│║        this album even more unique. I can only                 ║ │
│║        recommend this album to anyone who loves music.         ║ │
