| You can tell the people at Paper have got big ears. By which I |
| mean they're listening to a wider range of stuff than your average |
| dance music producer. This is really crafted house music. New Phunk |
| Theory are Chris Scott and Scott Bradford, and this, their debut |
| full-length release, follows two corking 12's: the house + guitar |
| workouts of "Honey Falls" and "Phunk Theory Theme" (guitarist Andy |
| Keogh take a bow). There's a richness to the sound, again often |
| missing in more arid house music. For example, "Singled Out" sets |
| off with loopy latino percussion, and drops a Sanborn-esque sax. |
| "Killer Picture" starts smooth and gets smoother, building on a raw |
| funk bassline and stabbed riffs with tasty flute and keyboard |
| solos. "Shoot The Shit" is just plain funny. This wider range of |
| instrumentation and attitude gives their disco foundations a strong |
| melodic edge, setting this beautifully worked phuture theory apart. |
| The final track, "0191 Reprise", is not even conventionally |
| "dancey", almost veering into electronica and ambient territory. |
| There is such a futuristic sheen to this dance sound that it |
| sometimes feels like the gleaming sci-fi utopian counterpart to |
| electronica's gritty dystopia. |
