| Fresh Roadrunner signee Red Tape comes out of the box with an |
| engaging but not particularly original sound on its full-length |
| debut, Radioactivist. The Sacramento-based band draws heavily from |
| that mid- to late-'80s musical proving ground, where hardcore, |
| post-hardcore, and thrash bands fought with Xeroxed flyers and |
| crappy amplifiers for the souls of the kids. Years later, Red Tape |
| has cherry-picked these styles' most effective elements, refined |
| the resulting components with a professional production rig (run |
| here by Orgy's Amir Derakh) and presented the finished product as |
| a set of knife-sharp anthems. Of course, the problem with this |
| approach is its store-bought, Ginsu II quality. There's the |
| righteous Fugazi rush of "Reactor," but its tensile guitar riffs |
| fall flat under Jeff Jaworski's shrink-wrapped sloganeering. |
| "Changes are treason to shallow eyes/Our heroes suck/Our leaders |
| suck." Now, to his credit, Jaworski calls the critical bluff. |
| "Maybe I'm predictable," he says in the same song. "But f*ck it |
| all." On that level, Radioactivist works just fine. "Stalingrad" |
| is hookier than anything the thrash or hardcore communities ever |
| produced, while the title track crosses more Fugazi references |
| with the metallic jocular crunch of Anthrax. With their |
| revivalist, highly accessible sound coupled to catch-phrase |
| polemics and pop-culture scattershot ("We're a generation of toxic |
| wasted/Sex and drugs the antidote"; "I got hands of gods/I got |
| Chinese bodyguards"), Red Tape is on its way to making |
| skateboarders and game-system music licensers very happy. |
