john beltran is a 26 year old hispanic-american composer from
lansing, michigan, who with his superb debut album earth and
nightfall unveiled himself as a solo artist to be reckoned with.
his elaborate blend of new age, ambient and intelligent techno on
earth and nightfall takes on the form of a magnum opus with an
intriguing and refreshing poetic quality, and as such it escapes
all categorising. john's music is a culmination not only of his
personal and musical adventures to date, but also of his exper
iments with technology, reflecting a serious and clearly defined
attitude to machines and their place. beltran (no relation to joey
beltram) grew up listening to and playing music by sting, johann
sebastian bach, kraftwerk and latin music artists. original ly
influenced by the record collection of his parents, he later
discovered the sounds of chicago and detroit, world music, jazz
and new age favourites such as george winston and enya. although
john does not dj nor listen intensively to much of the techno
music of today, living between detroit and chicago certainly left
its mark on him: he picked up on techno and house music partying
in the motor city and chi town to the sounds of derrick may, 808
state, mr. fingers, a guy called gerald and juan atkins. h is
music career started with the group open house, who put out a
number of singles on various small record labels. john then went
underground for one year to develop his own music and to find a
record company that could promote it worldwide. with a progre
ssive, multi-dimensional sound derived from many different
cultures, the main appeal of his music is its ability to grasp and
possess a wide array of listeners. from mild to wild to
invigorating. the combination of hard hitting percussions,
powerful bass lines and smooth keyboard arrangements brings a new
perspective to the rhythmic sound already established in the new
music era of today, adding a poetic sensibility that is simply
unique. another one of john's attributes is his innovative,
explosive stage performance that incorporates live musicians,
acoustic instruments and unquantised music programming. the use of
digital as well as analogue keyboards for a lush, realistic feel
guarantees the flowing sound of yesterday and today. music for the
