dub is pretty murky to begin with. its deep grooves and dark
rhythms are more or less what you'd discover if you performed an
exorcism on reggae. or, to paraphrase two of the pioneers of the
genre, lee perry and the mad professor, "dub put the voodoo upon
reggae." so you can imagine what it'll sound like played 10,000
leagues under the sea.
which is exactly how shining sounds. from the opening track's
water-logged guitar lines to the actual ocean sounds that engulf
you on "flash it again" and "in depth," the british duo of manasseh
(nick raphael) and the equalizer (jeremy armstrong) will have you
gasping for air in no time. they've even recorded some whale sounds
to complete the picture. it's quite a disconcerting feeling until
you give yourself over to it.
luckily, that's really pretty easy to do thanks to the
heavy-lidded, reggae melodies that dominate the album. even for a
pair of ears raised on pretty standard pop and rock, there's things
to hang on to. the album title, in fact, is a reference to the
dubbed-out version of bob marley's classic "sun is shining," that
makes its way to the surface here. "looking glass dub" nods at the
melody from the curtis mayfield soul classic, "gypsy woman" with
some chilling woodwinds, while "dub the profile" delves into the
blues.
you're better off however, not trying to hang on to anything but,
instead letting yourself be carried away by the album's
slow-burning grooves and thump-heavy bass lines. even though the
head-bobbing trance that manasseh and the equalizer bring on rather
effortlessly can often turn into some actual slumber, i can't think
of a better way to drift off to sleep.
