It used to be if you said "Go Cajun - Wherever You Are" - you'd know
right where to look. You'd look toward southwest Louisiana, where
the unique French-American-Louisiana culture has its roots. Now that
Cajun has become something the world knows about, you can find Cajun
dancing and food even a little of the Cajun style of life almost
everywhere, but if you want Cajun music, there's only one place to
get - and that's Louisiana, where the music was born and grew up.
It's also true that in those times that used to be only thought of
one kind of music when we said Cajun, and that was a kind of loose
and easy dance hall music with an accordian playing the melody and
the singing in French. Now we know that it can be lots of kinds of
music, from the traditional French bands, as they're called locally,
to the red hot, blues-tinged zydeco bands that took root in the
black French community.
All the kind of Cajun and Zydeco music have been mixed in together
for this free-wheeling collection. Here's the great Balfa Brothers
Orchestra, with the legendary Nathan Abshire playing accordian and
singing his signature tune "Pine Groove Blues". On the Zydeco side,
here's Clifton Chenier, the man who literally created what we know
as zydeco today, with "I'm The Zydeco Man", from his Grammy Award
winning album "I'm Here". If you want to hear where Cajun has been -
that's right here too, with Sady Courville and The Mamou Cajun Band.
If you ever have a chance to get to Louisiana yourself, this is the
kind of music you'll hear anywhere where the Cajuns are gathered to
eat crawfish, or dance, or just listen to their own artists playing
their own music. Austin Pitre or Joe Bonsall might not be household
names once you get out of bayou country, but down here this is juke
box music for the night out in the local barroom. When you say "Go
Cajun" - this is what Cajun music is all about.
