more dub infusions
compiled by daniel haaksman
the sound of dub is a favorite on the dancefloor and sofa alike
these days. everyone loves the "eased out vibe" of dub in its
various forms. the first issue of the best seven compilation
series "dub infusions 1989-1999" (sbcd0001) was focused on a
decade in which the relaxed groove with its warm basslines
established itself as a standard musical feeling. we now present
the sequel "more dub infusions", more or less a snapshot of the
present day "dub" situation.
the boundaries of rhythmic formats were shoved aside: dub is a
vibe thing, you know? and as such "more dub infusions" shows the
versatility of a mood. a mood which strikes both detroit producers
such as recloose as well as uk hip hop heads, like the mighty
roots manuva. you will find the vibe in bigga bush's fantastic
remix of swayzak's "illegal" or in novak projects "testament".
berlin's very own rhythm & sound featuring the old reggae crooner
cornell campell and their track "king in my empire" demonstrate
this mood, as much as the legendary american beat-poet william s.
burroughs, who collaborated with the movie director gus van sant
on the recording of the track "millions of images" on a somewhat
different contribution to the dub excursion.
"more dub infusions" again proofs the versatility and timelessness
of dub music. "light┤em up before you gogo!"
"more dub infusions" was compiled by berlin based dj and music
journalist daniel haaksman for sonar kollektiv's dancehall, dub
and reggae influenced sub label best seven records (run by daniel
w. best).
1. rhythm & sound w/ cornell campbell "king in my empire"
straight out of berlin. this track comes out of one of the most
wonderous labels in berlin: basic channel. these guys put the
techno sound into dub and the dub sound into techno. check the
vocals of the old reggae crooner cornell campbell on this. watch
the bass !
2. swayzak w/ benjamin zephaniah "illegal" (bigga bush version)
swayzak are the dons of tech house, alway looking for leftfield
aspects. "illegal" get's the bigga bush treatment here. deep dub
bass paired with latin percussion effects. and on top of it dub
poet benjamin suggests dissidence. check out the fantastic change
in tempo. a masterpiece remix by bigga bush - formerly known as
the don of rockers hi-fi and now also recording under the
lightning head moniker.
3. gus van sant & williams s. burroughs "millions of images"
yes, this comes from the main man of the original beat generation.
why is it on the compilation ? well, someone told us william s.
burroughs passed the secrets of his own effects technology on a
smoked out trip to jamaica in the early sixties and thus
influenced somebody called king tubby. the rest of the story you
may know.
4. williams traffic "rainbow dub"
this is a french release which orginally came out on the ever so
french label catalogue records. again we have a spoken word track
in a dub style. the gentle vocals are by james earl jones, he who
gave movie character darth vader the evil voice twist. check the
wah wah.
5. juantrip "shadows" (don air mix)
again a french man, this time in a remix by don air. he has been
on the london circuit for quite a while. orginally from
frankfurt/main this man can surely take you on some serious dub
excursions. attention, surf guitar included!
6. recloose "absence of one"
another somewhat different fan of the dub experience is the
detroit producer recloose. he is the guy who gave his first demo
tape to detroit's own techno genius producer carl craig wrapped in
a sandwich. this atmospheric track demonstrates how deep the man
can go when he slows down his tempo.
7. etienne de crecy "prix choc" (ultra dark mix)
most of you should be familiar with this one as a full on disco
stomper. here, we have the track from the great "super discount"
tributing the herb from heaven in a true smoked out version. irie.
8. roots manuva "witness (one hope)" (walworth road rockers dub)
roots manuva must have caused the biggest stir in the history of
uk hip hop recently. ok, let's say since caveman. here is the
proof that they are representing the west indian side of things. a
floor burning dub rocker.
9. the butch cassidy sound system "brothers and sisters"
it's just a beautiful reggae dub stepper.
10. novak project "testament"
this is an obscure english one side 12" with a very popular sample
of a british new wave band. recently also sampled by mary j.
blige. guess who it's from?
11. brooklyn funk essentials "dilly dally"
arthur baker produced this outfit. a man that has always been
involved in so many different projects e.g. work with bill laswell
and soul sonic force etc. again this is a poets thang on a dub
tip. sen?
12. die fantastischen vier "tag am meer" (original instrumental)
this one is a real german relic. as the story goes it is based on
a sample that was suggested by the man from the black forest, mr.
trⁿby to the most popular german hip hop band of the nineties.
additional trivia: rainer trⁿby, die fantastischen vier and
tiefschwarz all started their carreers in one of germany's most
influencial clubs of the nineties: the on-u club in stuttgart, a
former us gi disco. stuttgart is the city where mercedes benz and
porsche come from. oh, and "tag am meer" means "day by the sea",
naturally.
